Compare the2024 Chevrolet Silverado EVVS 2024 Rivian R1T

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Silverado EV are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The R1T doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Silverado EV has standard Reverse Automatic Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The R1T doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the Silverado EV and R1T have rear cross-traffic warning, but the Silverado EV has Rear Cross Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The R1T’s Rear Cross-Traffic Warning doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Silverado EV and the R1T have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and available driver alert monitors.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV weighs 1924 pounds more than the Rivian R1T. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than Rivian vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet second in initial quality, above the industry average. With 106 more problems per 100 vehicles, Rivian is ranked 32nd, below the industry average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than Rivian vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Chevrolet 8 places higher in reliability than Rivian.

On the EPA test cycle the Silverado EV 3WT gets better mileage than the R1T Quad Motor 20" Wheels (72 city/62 hwy vs. 69 city/60 hwy MPGe).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Silverado EV RST has standard 24-inch wheels. The R1T’s largest wheels are only 22-inches.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV’s wheels have 8 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Rivian R1T only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Silverado EV has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The R1T doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Silverado EV’s wheelbase is 9.9 inches longer than on the R1T (145.7 inches vs. 135.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Silverado EV is 1.1 inches wider in the front and 1.1 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the R1T.

For better maneuverability, the Silverado EV RST w/rear wheel steering’s turning circle is 2.7 feet tighter than the R1T’s (42.2 feet vs. 44.9 feet).

For excellent aerodynamics, the Silverado EV has standard flush composite headlights. The R1T has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The Silverado EV has .5 inches more front headroom, 3.4 inches more front legroom, 7.1 inches more front hip room, 4.3 inches more front shoulder room, 1.6 inches more rear headroom, 7.7 inches more rear legroom, 7.3 inches more rear hip room and 4.9 inches more rear shoulder room than the R1T.

A standard locking glovebox and optional locking center console (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Silverado EV. The R1T doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Maximum trailer towing in the Rivian R1T is limited to 11000 pounds. The Silverado EV offers up to a 12500 lbs. towing capacity.

The Silverado EV offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, warning, navigation instruction and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The R1T doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Silverado EV’s standard Keyless Open and Start allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, unlock the tailgate, and start the truck, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. An advanced key system standard on the R1T doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

The Silverado EV’s standard side window demisters help clear frost or condensation from the side windows in the winter. The R1T doesn’t even offer side window demisters, so the driver may have to wipe the windows from the outside to gain side vision.

When the Silverado EV RST is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The R1T’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Silverado EV RST’s Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The R1T doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The Chevrolet Silverado outsold the Rivian R1S/R1T by almost 12 to one during 2023.
