The Range Rover Sport’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Model X doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Range Rover Sport’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The Model X doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard 3D Surround Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Model X only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Range Rover Sport’s standard Rear Traffic Monitor uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side and Rear Traffic Braking automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. The Model X doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

The Range Rover Sport has standard InControl, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Model X doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the Model X have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and driver alert monitors.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Land Rover vehicles are better in initial quality than Tesla vehicles. With 54 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Land Rover higher than Tesla.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Range Rover Sport P550e’s maximum EPA estimated range on a full tank and a full charge is 505 miles, after which it can be refueled at any gas station in minutes. The Model X’s range is only 300 to 335 miles, after which the minimum time to recharge is 15 minutes for only a 49% charge at a specially configured quick charge station not available in most areas. A full recharge using a conventional 110-volt outlet can take up to 82 hours and 53 minutes.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover Sport SV’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the Model X:

The Range Rover Sport SV offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The Model X doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Range Rover Sport has larger standard tires than the Model X (275/50R21 vs. 265/45R20). The Range Rover Sport SV’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Model X (F:285/40R23 & R:305/35R23 vs. F:265/35R22 & R:285/35R22).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Sport has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 20-inch wheels are standard on the Model X. The Range Rover Sport’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 22-inch wheels optional on the Model X.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Model X; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Model X doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Tesla doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Model X.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Range Rover Sport’s wheelbase is 1.3 inches longer than on the Model X (118 inches vs. 116.7 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Sport w/Rear Wheel Steering’s turning circle is 4.4 feet tighter than the Model X’s (35.9 feet vs. 40.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport SV has a 1.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Model X (9.8 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Sport’s minimum ground clearance is 2.9 inches higher than on the Model X (11 vs. 8.1 inches).

Chassis

The Range Rover Sport is 4.4 inches shorter than the Model X, making the Range Rover Sport easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover Sport has a much larger cargo volume than the Model X with its rear seat up (31.9 vs. 15 cubic feet).

The Range Rover Sport’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The Model X 6-Passenger doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Range Rover Sport’s rear seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Model X doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Range Rover Sport’s available liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Model X doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Towing

The Range Rover Sport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Model X’s (7716 vs. 5000 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Range Rover Sport’s entire steering wheel hub sounds the horn, facilitating hitting the horn in an emergency. The Model X has a small, single button on the steering wheel spoke that can be hard to find quickly in an emergency.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Model X, the Range Rover Sport has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Model X doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Sport has a standard rear wiper. The Model X doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover Sport has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Model X doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Range Rover Sport offers optional dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The Model X doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

The Range Rover Sport’s sun-visors swivel front-to-side to block glare from the side windows. The Model X’s visors are fixed into the windshield header.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Range Rover Sport to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Model X doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Range Rover Sport has standard front air conditioned seats and offers them optionally in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Model X doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The Model X doesn’t offer a middle row seat center armrest.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/SV has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Model X.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Range Rover Sport owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Range Rover Sport will cost $2278 to $5210 less than the Model X over a five-year period.

The Range Rover Sport will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Range Rover Sport will retain 51.86% to 52.18% of its original price after five years, while the Model X only retains 38.31% to 39.81%.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Range Rover Sport first among large premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Model X isn’t in the top three.
