In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Mustang are reminded to check the back seat. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Ford Mustang has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Mustang has standard Post Collision Braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The Mustang’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the GranTurismo.

The Mustang has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the GranTurismo’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Mustang has standard Cross Traffic Alert and Cross Traffic Braking automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. Maserati charges extra for Rear Cross Path on the GranTurismo and the GranTurismo’s Rear Cross Path does not include automatic braking.

Both the Mustang and the GranTurismo have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Ford’s powertrain warranty covers the Mustang 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Maserati covers the GranTurismo. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the GranTurismo ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Mustang’s corrosion warranty is 1 year and unlimited miles longer than the GranTurismo’s (5/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

There are almost 27 times as many Ford dealers as there are Maserati dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Mustang’s warranty.

The Mustang has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the car’s engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Mustang uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The GranTurismo requires premium, which can cost on average about 82.8 cents more per gallon.

The Mustang has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

The Mustang offers a manual transmission for better acceleration, control and sportiness. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a manual transmission.

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Ford Mustang, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the GranTurismo.

For better traction, the Mustang Dark Horse’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the GranTurismo (F:305/30R19 & R:315/30R19 vs. F:265/30R20 & R:295/30R21).

The Mustang offers an optional space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the GranTurismo; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

For better maneuverability, the Mustang’s turning circle is 4.2 feet tighter than the GranTurismo’s (36.5 feet vs. 40.7 feet). The Mustang GT/Dark Horse’s turning circle is 2.9 feet tighter than the GranTurismo’s (37.8 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

The Ford Mustang may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 50 to 500 pounds less than the Maserati GranTurismo.

The Mustang is 5.8 inches shorter than the GranTurismo Modena, making the Mustang easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Mustang Convertible uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Mustang Fastback has a much larger trunk than the GranTurismo (13.5 vs. 10.9 cubic feet).

The Mustang has a 1000 lbs. towing capacity. The GranTurismo has no towing capacity.

The Mustang’s optional Easy Entry and Exit glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Ford Mustang comes in coupe and convertible bodystyles; the Maserati GranTurismo isn’t available as a convertible.
