The Sonata Hybrid has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the Camry Hybrid’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Sonata Hybrid has standard Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. Toyota charges extra for Rear Cross-Traffic Alert on the Camry Hybrid.

The Sonata Hybrid’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Camry Hybrid doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Sonata Hybrid and the Camry Hybrid have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and available around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is safer than the Toyota Camry Hybrid:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is safer than the Toyota Camry Hybrid:

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, and daytime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Sonata Hybrid the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2023, a rating granted to only 105 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Camry Hybrid has not been fully tested, yet.

Warranty

The Sonata Hybrid comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Camry Hybrid’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Sonata Hybrid 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Camry Hybrid. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Camry Hybrid ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Sonata Hybrid’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Camry Hybrid’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Sonata Hybrid for 1 year and 11000 miles longer than Toyota pays for maintenance for the Camry Hybrid (3/36,000 vs. 2/25000).

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai above average in initial quality. With 6 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 10 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked fifth.

As tested in Motor Trend the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is faster than the Toyota Camry Hybrid:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Sonata Hybrid gets better fuel mileage than the Camry Hybrid SE/XLE (44 city/51 hwy vs. 44 city/47 hwy).

Brakes and Stopping

The Sonata Hybrid’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Camry Hybrid are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Sonata Hybrid has larger tires than the Camry Hybrid (215/55R17 vs. 205/65R16).

The Sonata Hybrid’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Camry Hybrid’s standard 65 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Sonata Hybrid has standard 17-inch wheels. Smaller 16-inch wheels are standard on the Camry Hybrid.

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Sonata Hybrid is 1.3 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Camry Hybrid.

The Sonata Hybrid Limited handles at .83 G’s, while the Camry Hybrid LE pulls only .75 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Sonata Hybrid’s turning circle is 1.5 feet tighter than the Camry Hybrid LE’s (35.9 feet vs. 37.4 feet). The Sonata Hybrid’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the Camry Hybrid SE/XLE/XSE’s (35.9 feet vs. 38 feet).

Passenger Space

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Sonata Hybrid a Large car, while the Camry Hybrid is rated a Mid-size.

The Sonata Hybrid has 4.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Camry Hybrid (104.4 vs. 99.9).

The Sonata Hybrid has 1.7 inches more front headroom, 4 inches more front legroom, .2 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom and .4 inches more rear shoulder room than the Camry Hybrid.

Cargo Capacity

The Sonata Hybrid has a larger trunk than the Camry Hybrid (15.6 vs. 15.1 cubic feet).

To allow full utilization of available cargo room, the Sonata Hybrid’s trunk lid uses concealed beam hinges that don’t intrude into the trunk. Its intrusive beam hinge reduces the Camry Hybrid’s useful trunk space.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Sonata Hybrid’s trunk can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Sonata Hybrid Limited also has a standard power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The Camry Hybrid doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

Ergonomics

When two different drivers share the Sonata Hybrid Limited, the memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Camry Hybrid doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Sonata Hybrid Limited’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Camry Hybrid doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Sonata Hybrid Limited’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Camry Hybrid’s intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Consumer Reports rated the Sonata Hybrid’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the Camry Hybrid’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Sonata Hybrid to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Camry Hybrid doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Sonata Hybrid’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Toyota charges extra for heated mirrors on the Camry Hybrid.

When the Sonata Hybrid Limited is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Camry Hybrid’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Camry Hybrid and isn’t available on the Camry Hybrid Nightshade.

The Sonata Hybrid Limited’s Remote Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Camry Hybrid doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
