Compare the2024 Hyundai Elantra NVS 2024 Genesis G70

Both the Elantra N and the G70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Hyundai Elantra N achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2024 model year. This recognition was based on its impressive performance in the small overlap frontal crash test, updated side impact crash test, headlight evaluations, and pedestrian crash prevention testing. The G70 has not yet been fully evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

There are over 3 times as many Hyundai dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Elantra N’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 7 more problems per 100 vehicles, Genesis is ranked fourth.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 7 places higher in reliability than Genesis.

On the EPA test cycle the Elantra N gets better mileage than the G70:

The Elantra N offers a manual transmission for better acceleration, control and fuel economy. The G70 doesn’t offer a manual transmission.

The Elantra N offers an optional sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The G70 doesn’t offer an SMG.

For better stopping power the Elantra N’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the G70:

In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The Elantra N has standard Braake Assist to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The G70 doesn’t offer a brake assist feature.

For better traction, the Elantra N has larger tires than the G70 (245/35R19 vs. 225/40R19).

The Elantra N’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the G70’s standard 40 series front tires.

The Elantra N handles at .99 G’s, while the G70 pulls only .94 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Hyundai Elantra N may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 350 to 600 pounds less than the Genesis G70.

To minimize engine movement during hard acceleration and transmission shifts, the Elantra N has solid engine mounts. The G70 uses conventional rubber.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Elantra N a Mid-size car, while the G70 is rated a Compact.

The Elantra N has 3.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the G70 (99.4 vs. 95.9).

The Elantra N has .1 inches more front headroom, .2 inches more front shoulder room, .4 inches more rear headroom, 3.2 inches more rear legroom and 1 inch more rear shoulder room than the G70.

The Elantra N has a much larger trunk than the G70 (14.2 vs. 10.5 cubic feet).

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Hyundai Elantra N has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the G70 Advanced/Sport Prestige offers wireless charging.

The Elantra N will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Elantra N will retain 52.19% to 53.5% of its original price after five years, while the G70 only retains 49.24% to 51.02%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Hyundai Elantra N will be $1774 to $12830 less than for the Genesis G70.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Elantra as the 2021 North American Car of the Year. The G70 was last chosen in 2019.

The Hyundai Elantra outsold the Genesis G70 by over 10 to one during 2023.
