Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Alfa Romeo Tonale doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

Both the Eclipse Cross and the Tonale have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Eclipse Cross comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Tonale’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Eclipse Cross 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Tonale. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Tonale ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Eclipse Cross’ corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Tonale’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Mitsubishi pays for scheduled maintenance on the Eclipse Cross for 2 years and 30,000 miles. Mitsubishi will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance (up to 3 visits). Alfa Romeo only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Tonale.

There are almost 3 times as many Mitsubishi dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Eclipse Cross’ warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Eclipse Cross’ reliability 20 points higher than the Tonale.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi above average in long-term dependability. With 9 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Alfa Romeo is rated below average.

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Tonale requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost on average about 82.8 cents more per gallon.

The Eclipse Cross has 4.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tonale (15.8 vs. 11.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Transmission

The Eclipse Cross has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Tonale doesn’t offer a CVT.

Tires and Wheels

The Eclipse Cross has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Tonale; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Eclipse Cross’ wheelbase is 1.3 inches longer than on the Tonale (105.1 inches vs. 103.8 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Eclipse Cross AWD’s turning circle is 3.1 feet tighter than the Tonale’s (34.8 feet vs. 37.9 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Eclipse Cross has a 2.9 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Tonale (8.5 vs. 5.6 inches), allowing the Eclipse Cross to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 650 to 700 pounds less than the Alfa Romeo Tonale.

Passenger Space

The Eclipse Cross has .7 inches more front headroom, .5 inches more front shoulder room and .3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Tonale.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Eclipse Cross’ rear seats recline. The Tonale’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Eclipse Cross has a larger cargo volume than the Tonale with its rear seat up (23.4 vs. 22.9 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The Eclipse Cross SEL offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Tonale doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Both the Eclipse Cross and the Tonale offer available heated front seats. The Eclipse Cross SEL also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Tonale.

Recommendations

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross outsold the Alfa Romeo Tonale by almost five to one during 2023.
