Compare the2024 Maserati GranTurismoVS 2024 BMW M4

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the GranTurismo. But it costs extra on the M4.

Both the GranTurismo and the M4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Maserati vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Maserati above average in initial quality. With 10 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is rated lower.

The GranTurismo Modena’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 10 more horsepower (483 vs. 473) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (443 vs. 406) than the M4’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The GranTurismo Trofeo’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 39 more horsepower (542 vs. 503) and 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (487 vs. 479) than the M4 Competition’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the GranTurismo gets better mileage than the M4 Coupe:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the GranTurismo’s fuel efficiency. The M4 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The GranTurismo has 2.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the M4 (18.5 vs. 15.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Maserati GranTurismo comes standard with an automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city. Automatic costs extra on the M4.

For better traction and acceleration, the GranTurismo has larger rear tires than the M4 (295/30R21 vs. 285/35R19).

The GranTurismo’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the M4’s standard 40 series front and 35 series rear tires. The GranTurismo’s tires are lower profile than the M4’s optional 35 series front tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GranTurismo has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Smaller 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels are standard on the M4. The M4’s largest wheels are only 19-inches in the front and 20-inches in the rear.

The front and rear suspension of the GranTurismo uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the M4, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The GranTurismo has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The GranTurismo’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The M4 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GranTurismo’s wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer than on the M4 (115.3 inches vs. 112.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GranTurismo is 1.1 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than on the M4.

The design of the Maserati GranTurismo amounts to more than styling. The GranTurismo has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .28 Cd. That is significantly lower than the M4 (.34). A more efficient exterior helps the GranTurismo go faster and keeps the interior quieter. It also helps the GranTurismo get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the GranTurismo uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The M4 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the M4, the GranTurismo has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The GranTurismo’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The M4 has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the GranTurismo to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The M4 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GranTurismo has standard extendable sun visors. The M4 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The GranTurismo has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The M4 doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Maserati GranTurismo has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the M4.
