Both the V60 and E-Class All-Terrain Wagon have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The V60 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The V60 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The V60’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the V60 has standard Cross Traffic Alert and Braking Intervention automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. Mercedes charges extra for Rear Cross-Traffic Alert on the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon.

Both the V60 and the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and driver alert monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Volvo V60 is safer than the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain Wagon:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Volvo V60 is safer than the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain Wagon:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, with its optional vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the V60 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 131 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The V60’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the V60 for 4 years and 40,000 miles. Volvo will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon.

Reliability

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the V60 has a standard 210-amp alternator. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s 180-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the V60’s reliability 31 points higher than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volvo 4 places higher in reliability than Mercedes.

Engine

The V60’s 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid produces 93 more horsepower (455 vs. 362) and 154 lbs.-ft. more torque (523 vs. 369) than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Volvo V60 is faster than the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain Wagon:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the V60 T8 Polestar Engineered Extended Range running on electricity gets better mileage than the E 450 All-Terrain 4MATIC (74 city/73 hwy MPGe vs. 21 city/28 hwy).

On the EPA test cycle the V60 T8 Polestar running its gasoline engine gets better fuel mileage than the E 450 All-Terrain 4MATIC (30 city/33 hwy vs. 21 city/28 hwy).

The V60 T8 Polestar Engineered Extended Range can travel with zero emissions for 41 miles. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

The V60 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Volvo V60 higher (7 out of 10) than the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain Wagon (6). This means the V60 produces up to 1.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon every 15,000 miles.

The V60 stops shorter than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon:

Tires and Wheels

The V60’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s standard 45 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The V60 Polestar Engineered handles at .90 G’s, while the E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain pulls only .89 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the V60’s turning circle is 1.9 feet tighter than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s (37.1 feet vs. 39 feet).

Chassis

The V60 is 7.4 inches shorter than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon, making the V60 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Towing

Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the V60 uses the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

The V60’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s parking brake has to be released manually.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the V60 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The V60 has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The V60 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon.

Economic Advantages

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the V60 is less expensive to operate than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon because typical repairs cost much less on the V60 than the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon, including $283 less for a water pump, $603 less for a muffler, $401 less for a starter, $118 less for fuel injection, $77 less for front struts, $561 less for a timing belt/chain and $634 less for a power steering pump.
