Safety

The McLaren GT has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The 911 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the McLaren GT and the 911 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Warranty

The GT comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The 911’s 50,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

Engine

The McLaren GT’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 233 more horsepower (612 vs. 379) and 134 lbs.-ft. more torque (465 vs. 331) than the 911’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The McLaren GT’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 169 more horsepower (612 vs. 443) and 75 lbs.-ft. more torque (465 vs. 390) than the 911 S’ standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The McLaren GT’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 139 more horsepower (612 vs. 473) and 45 lbs.-ft. more torque (465 vs. 420) than the 911 GTS/Dakar’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

Tires and Wheels

The McLaren GT’s 225/35R20 front and 295/30R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 911 Dakar’s standard 45 series front and 40 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the McLaren GT has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Smaller 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are standard on the 911.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the McLaren GT’s wheelbase is 8.8 inches longer than on the 911 (105.3 inches vs. 96.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the McLaren GT is 3.1 inches wider in the front and 3.9 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the 911.

The McLaren GT’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (42.5% to 57.5%) than the 911’s (39.5% to 60.5%). This gives the McLaren GT more stable handling and braking.

Cargo Capacity

The McLaren GT has a much larger trunk than the 911 Coupe with its rear seat up (20.2 vs. 4.6 cubic feet). The McLaren GT has a much larger trunk with its rear seat folded than the 911 Coupe with its rear seat folded (20.2 vs. 13.8 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the McLaren GT offers an optional power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The 911 doesn’t offer a power trunk.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system optional in the 911, the McLaren GT offers an optional driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The McLaren GT’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the 911.
