Safety

The McLaren GT has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Corvette doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The McLaren GT has standard Parking Sensors to help warn the driver about vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles behind or in front of their vehicle. The Corvette doesn’t offer a front parking aid.

Both the McLaren GT and the Corvette have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Warranty

The GT comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Corvette’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

The McLaren GT’s corrosion warranty is 4 years and unlimited miles longer than the Corvette’s (10/unlimited vs. 6/100,000).

Reliability

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the McLaren GT has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Corvette.

Engine

The McLaren GT’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 122 more horsepower (612 vs. 490) than the Corvette’s standard 6.2 V8. The McLaren GT’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 117 more horsepower (612 vs. 495) than the Corvette Z51’s standard 6.2 V8. The McLaren GT’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 5 lbs.-ft. more torque (465 vs. 460) than the Corvette Z06’s standard 5.5 DOHC V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the McLaren GT gets better mileage than the Corvette:

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the McLaren GT’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The Corvette doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the McLaren GT’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Corvette:

Front Rotors

14.4 inches

12.6 inches

Rear Rotors

13.9 inches

13.3 inches

Tires and Wheels

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the McLaren GT has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Smaller 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are standard on the Corvette.

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the McLaren GT is .2 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Corvette.

The McLaren GT’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (42.5% to 57.5%) than the Corvette’s (40% to 60%). This gives the McLaren GT more stable handling and braking.

Cargo Capacity

The McLaren GT has a much larger trunk than the Corvette Coupe (20.2 vs. 12.6 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the McLaren GT offers an optional power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The Corvette doesn’t offer a power liftgate.

Ergonomics

The McLaren GT’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Corvette.

The McLaren GT’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Corvette’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the McLaren GT offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Corvette doesn’t offer cornering lights.
