Compare the2024 Dodge Durango SRTVS 2024 Volvo XC90

Both the Durango SRT and the XC90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available crash mitigating brakes and lane departure warning systems.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Dodge Durango SRT is safer than the Volvo XC90:

There are almost 9 times as many Dodge dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Durango SRT’s warranty.

The Dodge Durango SRT’s engines use a cast iron block for durability, while the XC90’s engines use an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge first in initial quality, above the industry average. With 110 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 32nd, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge above average in long-term dependability. With 26 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Volvo is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Dodge vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Dodge 4 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

The Durango SRT has more powerful engines than the XC90:

As tested in Car and Driver the Dodge Durango SRT V8 is faster than the XC90 B6 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Durango SRT’s fuel efficiency. The XC90 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The Durango SRT has 5.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the XC90 (24.6 vs. 18.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Durango SRT has a standard locking fuel door with a power remote release convenient to the driver. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the XC90. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

The Durango SRT’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The XC90 doesn’t offer launch control.

For better traction, the Durango SRT has larger tires than the XC90 (295/45R20 vs. 235/55R19). The Durango SRT’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the XC90 (295/45R20 vs. 275/45R20).

The Durango SRT’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XC90’s standard 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Durango SRT has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the XC90.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the Durango SRT can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The XC90 doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The Durango SRT has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The XC90 Ultimate suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The front and rear suspension of the Durango SRT uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the XC90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Durango SRT’s wheelbase is 2.3 inches longer than on the XC90 (119.8 inches vs. 117.5 inches).

The Durango SRT 392 handles at .88 G’s, while the XC90 B6 Core pulls only .77 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Durango SRT Hellcat executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.4 seconds quicker than the XC90 B6 Ultimate (25 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 27.4 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

The Durango SRT uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The XC90 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Durango SRT has 37.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XC90 (141.4 vs. 103.8).

The Durango SRT’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the XC90’s (8700 vs. 5000 pounds).

The Durango SRT has a higher standard payload capacity than the XC90 (1410 vs. 1210 lbs.).

The Durango SRT has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the XC90 (1590 vs. 1210 lbs.).

The engine in the Durango SRT is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the XC90. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The Durango SRT’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The XC90 has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Durango SRT has standard extendable sun visors. The XC90 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Durango SRT has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the XC90.
