Compare the2024 Chevrolet Blazer EVVS 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Chevrolet Blazer EV has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Blazer EV’s standard pretensioning seatbelts also sense rear collisions and remove slack from the seatbelts to help protect the occupants from whiplash and other injuries. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Blazer EV and the Ioniq 5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

The Chevrolet Blazer EV weighs 517 to 1568 pounds more than the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

There are almost 4 times as many Chevrolet dealers as there are Hyundai dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Blazer EV’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than Hyundai vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet above average in initial quality. With 22 more problems per 100 vehicles, Hyundai is rated lower.

For better traction, the Blazer EV has larger standard tires than the Ioniq 5 (255/60R19 vs. 235/55R19). The Blazer EV RS’ tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Ioniq 5 (275/45R21 vs. 255/45R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Blazer EV RS has standard 21-inch wheels. The Ioniq 5’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Chevrolet Blazer EV’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

Having a flat tire is dangerous, inconvenient and expensive. The self-sealing tires available on the Blazer EV can automatically seal most punctures up to 3/16 of an inch, effectively preventing most flat tires. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer self-sealing tires.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Blazer EV’s wheelbase is 3.7 inches longer than on the Ioniq 5 (121.8 inches vs. 118.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Blazer EV is 1.5 inches wider in the front and 1.1 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Ioniq 5.

For greater off-road capability the Blazer EV has a 1.8 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Ioniq 5 (7.9 vs. 6.1 inches), allowing the Blazer EV to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Blazer EV has 1.1 inches more front headroom, 2.5 inches more front legroom, 3.5 inches more front hip room, 1 inch more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear hip room and .6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Ioniq 5.

The Blazer EV’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Ioniq 5’s (1500 vs. 0 pounds).

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Blazer EV uses the StabiliTrak® sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Blazer EV’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Ioniq 5’s standard power windows’ passenger windows don’t open automatically. The Ioniq 5 SEL/Limited’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to lower them fully.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Blazer EV has a standard rear wiper. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Blazer EV’s optional rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Ioniq 5 offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Both the Blazer EV and the Ioniq 5 offer available heated front seats. The Blazer EV RS also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Ioniq 5.

Motor Trend selected the Blazer EV as their 2024 Sport Utility of the Year. The Ioniq 5 has never been chosen.

The Chevrolet Blazer outsold the Hyundai Ioniq 5 by almost two to one during 2023.
