Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Limited has standard Reverse Collision-Avoidance Assist that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s standard Downhill Brake Control allows you to creep down safely. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer Downhill Brake Control.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the Bolt EUV’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has standard Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. Chevrolet charges extra for Rear Cross Traffic Alert on the Bolt EUV and the Bolt EUV’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert does not include automatic braking.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid and the Bolt EUV have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and available around view monitors.

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, daytime pedestrian crash prevention, and nighttime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2023, a rating granted to only 67 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Bolt EUV has not been tested, yet.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Bolt EUV’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Chevrolet covers the Bolt EUV. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Bolt EUV ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s corrosion warranty is 1 year and unlimited miles longer than the Bolt EUV’s (7/unlimited vs. 6/100,000).

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Hyundai will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Bolt EUV.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s reliability 43 points higher than the Bolt EUV.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 23 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chevrolet is ranked 10th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 9 places higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s 1.6 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 61 more horsepower (261 vs. 200) than the Bolt EUV’s electric motor.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s maximum EPA estimated range on a full tank and a full charge is 422 miles, after which it can be refueled at any gas station in minutes. The Bolt EUV’s range is only 247 miles, after which the minimum time to recharge is 30 minutes for only a 45% charge at a specially configured quick charge station not available in most areas. A full recharge using a conventional 110-volt outlet can take up to 55 hours.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has a standard locking fuel door which locks and unlocks with the power locks. The Bolt EUV doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and a locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

For better stopping power the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Bolt EUV:

For better traction, the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has larger tires than the Bolt EUV (235/55R19 vs. 215/50R17).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has standard 19-inch wheels. Only 17-inch wheels are available on the Bolt EUV.

For superior ride and handling, the Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Chevrolet Bolt EUV has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Bolt EUV’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid flat and controlled during cornering. The Bolt EUV’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s wheelbase is 3.2 inches longer than on the Bolt EUV (108.5 inches vs. 105.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid is 4.1 inches wider in the front and 4.4 inches wider in the rear than on the Bolt EUV.

For greater off-road capability the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has a 2.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Bolt EUV (8.3 vs. 5.6 inches), allowing the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The front grille of the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has 9.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Bolt EUV (105.9 vs. 96.5).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s power liftgate can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s power liftgate can also be opened or closed by pressing a button. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening liftgate.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has a 2000 lbs. towing capacity. The Bolt EUV has no towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

When two different drivers share the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Limited, the memory seats make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer memory seats.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Limited’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid’s standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

Both the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid and the Bolt EUV offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Limited’s Remote Smart Parking Assist can parallel park by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Park Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Bolt EUV doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Chevrolet Bolt EUV isn't recommended.
