The Niro comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The XC40’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.
Kia’s powertrain warranty covers the Niro 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the XC40. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the XC40 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.
There are almost 3 times as many Kia dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Niro’s warranty.
Reliability
A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Niro’s reliability 13 points higher than the XC40.
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Kia vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia above average in initial quality. With 80 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is rated below average.
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Kia vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia first in reliability, above the industry average. With 111 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 30th.
From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Kia vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Kia 5 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Kia Niro uses regular unleaded gasoline. The XC40 requires premium, which can cost on average about 82.8 cents more per gallon.
Environmental Friendliness
In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Kia Niro higher (7 out of 10) than the Volvo XC40 (5). This means the Niro produces up to 8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XC40 every 15,000 miles.
Transmission
The Niro offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The XC40 doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

Suspension and Handling
The Niro has standard front gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The XC40’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.
The Niro SX handles at .84 G’s, while the XC40 B5 Plus pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.
For better maneuverability, the Niro’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the XC40’s (34.8 feet vs. 37.4 feet).
Chassis
The Kia Niro may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 800 pounds less than the Volvo XC40.
The design of the Kia Niro amounts to more than styling. The Niro has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is significantly lower than the XC40 (.34) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Niro get better fuel mileage.
The front grille of the Niro uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The XC40 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.
Passenger Space
The Niro has 7.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XC40 (105.1 vs. 98).
The Niro has 1.5 inches more front headroom, .6 inches more front legroom, .5 inches more rear headroom and 3.7 inches more rear legroom than the XC40.
Cargo Capacity
The Niro has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the XC40 with its rear seat up (22.8 vs. 20.4 cubic feet). The Niro has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the XC40 with its rear seat folded (63.7 vs. 57.5 cubic feet).
Ergonomics
The Niro SX’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The XC40 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.
To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Niro has standard extendable sun visors. The XC40 doesn’t offer extendable visors.
Standard air-conditioned seats in the Niro SX keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The XC40 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
