For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Genesis GV60 have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Alfa Romeo Tonale doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The GV60 Advanced/Performance’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Tonale doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the GV60 and Tonale have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The GV60 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Tonale’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The GV60 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Tonale doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The GV60 has standard Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Tonale doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the GV60 and Tonale have rear cross-traffic warning, but the GV60 has Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Tonale’s Rear Cross-Path Detection doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the GV60 and the Tonale have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Genesis GV60 weighs 563 to 757 pounds more than the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Genesis GV60 has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2024 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The Tonale has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

The GV60 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Tonale’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the GV60 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Tonale. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Tonale ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The GV60’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Tonale’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the GV60 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Alfa Romeo only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Tonale.

There are almost 2 times as many Genesis dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GV60’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the GV60’s reliability 16 points higher than the Tonale.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 90 more problems per 100 vehicles, Alfa Romeo is ranked 29th.

The GV60 Advance’s standard electric motors produces 29 more horsepower (314 vs. 285) and 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (446 vs. 350) than the Tonale’s 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The GV60 Performance’s standard electric motors produces 144 more horsepower (429 vs. 285) and 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (446 vs. 350) than the Tonale’s 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Consumer Reports the GV60 Advance electric motors is faster than the Alfa Romeo Tonale:

The GV60 can travel with zero emissions on a full charge for 235 to 294 miles. The Tonale has to start its internal combustion engine after only 33 miles.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Genesis GV60 higher (10 out of 10) than the Alfa Romeo Tonale (6). This means the GV60 produces up to 12.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Tonale every 15,000 miles.

For better stopping power the GV60 Performance’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Tonale:

The GV60’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Tonale are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the GV60 has larger tires than the Tonale (255/45R20 vs. 225/55R18). The GV60 Advance’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Tonale (255/45R20 vs. 235/45R19).

The GV60 Advance’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Tonale’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GV60 Standard has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Tonale. The GV60 Performance’s 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the Tonale.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GV60’s wheelbase is 10.4 inches longer than on the Tonale (114.2 inches vs. 103.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GV60 is 1.9 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than on the Tonale.

The GV60 Performance handles at .85 G’s, while the Tonale Veloce pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The GV60 Advanced/Performance uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Tonale doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The GV60 has .2 inches more front headroom, .6 inches more front legroom, 1.8 inches more front shoulder room and 1.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the Tonale.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the GV60’s rear seats recline. The Tonale’s rear seats don’t recline.

The GV60 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Tonale with its rear seat up (24 vs. 22.9 cubic feet). The GV60 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Tonale with its rear seat folded (54.7 vs. 50.5 cubic feet).

A standard locking glovebox keeps your small valuables safer in the GV60. The Tonale doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The GV60’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Tonale.

The GV60 has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Tonale doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GV60 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Tonale doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the GV60 is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Tonale’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Both the GV60 and the Tonale have standard heated front seats. The GV60 Performance also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Tonale.

The GV60 offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Tonale.

The GV60 Advanced/Performance has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the rear seat, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Tonale doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The GV60 Advanced/Performance’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Tonale’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park and it doesn’t offer remote control parking.

The GV60 is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Tonale doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Genesis GV60, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Alfa Romeo Tonale isn't recommended.
