Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the Passport deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The Passport’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The Blazer’s side airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Passport. But it costs extra on the Blazer.

The Passport has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the Blazer’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Passport has standard Cross Traffic Monitor, helping the driver avoid collisions. Chevrolet charges extra for Rear Cross Traffic Alert on the Blazer.

Both the Passport and the Blazer have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems and rearview cameras.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Passport is safer than the Chevrolet Blazer:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Honda Passport is safer than the Chevrolet Blazer:

Warranty

The Passport’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Blazer’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Honda pays for scheduled maintenance on the Passport for 2 years or 24,000 miles. Honda will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Blazer.

Reliability

The engine in the Passport has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engines in the Blazer have dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda 15 places higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

Engine

The Passport’s 3.5 SOHC V6 produces 52 more horsepower (280 vs. 228) and 4 lbs.-ft. more torque (262 vs. 258) than the Blazer’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Car and Driver the Honda Passport is faster than the Chevrolet Blazer V6:

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Honda Passport uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Blazer with the 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder engine requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost on average about 82.8 cents more per gallon.

The Passport has a standard locking fuel door with a power remote release convenient to the driver. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Blazer. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Passport has larger standard tires than the Blazer (245/60R18 vs. 235/65R18).

The Passport TrailSport’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Blazer’s standard 65 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Passport’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (58.5% to 41.5%) than the Blazer’s (60.1% to 39.9%). This gives the Passport more stable handling and braking.

For greater off-road capability the Passport has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Blazer LT (8.1 vs. 7.5 inches), allowing the Passport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Passport’s minimum ground clearance is .5 inch higher than on the Blazer RS/Premier (8.1 vs. 7.6 inches).

Chassis

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Passport Elite is quieter than the Blazer RS 4x4 (65 vs. 66 dB).

Passenger Space

The Passport has 7.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Blazer (114.9 vs. 107.8).

The Passport has 3.5 inches more front hip room, 2.9 inches more front shoulder room, 1.4 inches more rear headroom, 3.1 inches more rear hip room and 3.3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Blazer.

Cargo Capacity

The Passport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Blazer with its rear seat up (41.2 vs. 30.5 cubic feet). The Passport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Blazer with its rear seat folded (77.7 vs. 64.2 cubic feet).

Towing

The Passport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Blazer’s (5000 vs. 1500 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Passport’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Blazer, and is not available on all models.

The Passport’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Blazer’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

If the windows are left open on the Passport the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Blazer can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Passport’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Blazer’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The Passport Elite’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Passport to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Blazer doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Honda Passport has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Blazer.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Passport owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Passport will cost $70 to $1490 less than the Blazer over a five-year period.

Consumer Reports® recommends both the Honda Passport and the Chevrolet Blazer, based on reliability, safety and performance.

Car and Driver performed a comparison test in its April 2019 issue and they ranked the Honda Passport Elite first. They ranked the Chevrolet Blazer RS 4x4 third.
