The G80’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The TLX doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the G80 and TLX have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The G80 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The TLX’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the G80 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The TLX doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The G80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The TLX doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The G80 has standard Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The TLX doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The G80 Sport Prestige has a standard Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The TLX doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the G80. But it costs extra on the TLX.

The G80 has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the TLX’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the G80 has standard Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist and automatically engage the brakes. Acura charges extra for Rear Cross Traffic Monitor on the TLX and the TLX’s Rear Cross Traffic Monitor does not include automatic braking.

Both the G80 and the TLX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Genesis G80 is safer than the Acura TLX:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Genesis G80 is safer than the Acura TLX:

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, daytime pedestrian crash prevention, and nighttime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G80 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2023, a rating granted to only 50 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The TLX has not been fully tested, yet.

Warranty

The G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The TLX’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G80 4 years and 30,000 miles longer than Acura covers the TLX. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the TLX ends after only 6 years or 70,000 miles.

The G80’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the TLX’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the G80 for 1 year and 12000 miles longer than Acura pays for maintenance for the TLX (3/36,000 vs. 2/24,000).

There are over 13 percent more Genesis dealers than there are Acura dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the G80’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the G80’s reliability 22 points higher than the TLX.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 first among upper midsize premium cars in their 2023 Initial Quality Study. The TLX isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Acura vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis above average in initial quality. With 31 more problems per 100 vehicles, Acura is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Acura vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 89 more problems per 100 vehicles, Acura is ranked 28th.

Engine

The G80 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 28 more horsepower (300 vs. 272) and 31 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 280) than the TLX’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The G80 3.5T’s standard 3.5 turbo V6 produces 20 more horsepower (375 vs. 355) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 354) than the TLX Type S’ standard 3.0 turbo V6.

As tested in Motor Trend the G80 2.5T 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder is faster than the Acura TLX turbo 4 cyl.:

Fuel Economy and Range

The G80 2.5T’s standard fuel tank has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the TLX (17.2 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The G80 3.5T’s standard fuel tank has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the TLX (19.3 vs. 15.9 gallons).

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the G80’s standard front brake rotors are larger than those on the TLX:

The G80 3.5T’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the TLX are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the G80 has larger standard tires than the TLX (245/50R18 vs. 235/50R18).

The G80 has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the TLX; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G80’s wheelbase is 5.5 inches longer than on the TLX (118.5 inches vs. 113 inches).

The G80’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52% to 48%) than the TLX’s (57% to 43%). This gives the G80 more stable handling and braking.

The G80 handles at .91 G’s, while the TLX A-Spec SH-AWD pulls only .87 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The G80 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the TLX A-Spec SH-AWD (25.9 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 26.9 seconds @ .64 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the G80’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the TLX’s (38.1 feet vs. 40.1 feet). The G80’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the TLX with 19/20-inch wheels’ (38.1 feet vs. 40.2 feet).

Chassis

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the G80 is quieter than the TLX Type S:

Passenger Space

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the G80 a Mid-size car, while the TLX is rated a Compact.

The G80 has 10.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the TLX (103.8 vs. 93.4).

The G80 has 3.9 inches more front headroom, .1 inches more front shoulder room, 1.9 inches more rear headroom, 3.8 inches more rear legroom and 2.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the TLX.

Cargo Capacity

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the G80’s trunk can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The G80 also offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The TLX doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the G80 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the TLX. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because there are no rear spark plugs and the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

The power windows standard on both the G80 and the TLX have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the G80 is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The TLX prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The G80’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The TLX’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Consumer Reports rated the G80’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the TLX’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

A power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades are standard in the G80 Advanced/Sport/Sport Prestige to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The TLX doesn’t offer a rear or rear side window sunshades.

The G80’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The TLX has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The G80 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the TLX.

The G80 Sport/Sport Prestige has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the TLX.

The G80 Sport Prestige’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The TLX doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Genesis G80, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Acura TLX isn't recommended.
