Compare the2024 Genesis G80VS 2024 Toyota Crown

The G80’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Crown doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the G80 and Crown have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The G80 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Crown’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The G80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Crown doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the G80 has standard Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist with automatic braking, systems which detect vehicles approaching from the sides and can automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision. Only the Crown Limited/Platinum offers Parking Support Brake.

Both the G80 and the Crown have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Side impacts caused 23% of all road fatalities in 2018, down from 29% in 2003, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced its side barrier test. In order to continue improving vehicle safety, the IIHS has started using a more severe side impact test: 37 MPH (up from 31 MPH), with a 4180-pound barrier (up from 3300 pounds). The results of this newly developed test demonstrates that the Genesis G80 is safer than the Crown:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G80 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 126 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Crown has not been fully tested, yet.

The G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Crown’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G80 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Crown. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Crown ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The G80’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Crown’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the G80 for 1 year and 11000 miles longer than Toyota pays for maintenance for the Crown (3/36,000 vs. 2/25000).

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 first among upper midsize premium cars in their 2023 Initial Quality Study. The Crown isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis above average in initial quality. With 18 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 3 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked fifth.

The G80 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 64 more horsepower (300 vs. 236) than the Crown’s standard 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid. The G80 3.5T’s standard 3.5 turbo V6 produces 35 more horsepower (375 vs. 340) than the Crown Platinum’s standard 2.4 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the G80 2.5T 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder is faster than the Toyota Crown 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid:

The G80 2.5T’s standard fuel tank has 2.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Crown (17.2 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The G80 3.5T’s standard fuel tank has 4.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Crown (19.3 vs. 14.5 gallons).

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Genesis G80, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a six-speed automatic is available for the Crown.

For better stopping power the G80’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Crown:

The G80 3.5T’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Crown are solid, not vented.

The G80 stops much shorter than the Crown:

For better traction, the G80 has larger standard tires than the Crown (245/50R18 vs. 225/55R19). The G80 Advanced/Sport/2.5T Sport Prestige’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Crown (F:245/45R19 & R:275/40R19 vs. 225/55R19).

The G80 2.5T Standard’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Crown’s standard 55 series tires. The G80 3.5T Sport Prestige’s optional 245/40R20 front and 275/35R20 rear tires have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile than the Crown’s optional 45 series tires.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G80’s wheelbase is 6.3 inches longer than on the Crown (118.5 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the G80 is 1.1 inches wider in the front and 1.5 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Crown.

The G80 handles at .91 G’s, while the Crown Limited pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The G80 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.6 seconds quicker than the Crown Platinum (25.9 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 27.5 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the G80 is quieter than the Crown Limited (66 vs. 67 dB).

The G80 has 5.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Crown (103.8 vs. 98).

The G80 has 2.9 inches more front headroom, .1 inches more front legroom, 1.2 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom and 2 inches more rear shoulder room than the Crown.

To allow full utilization of available cargo room, the G80’s trunk lid uses concealed beam hinges that don’t intrude into the trunk. Its intrusive beam hinge reduces the Crown’s useful trunk space.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the G80’s trunk can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The G80 also offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The Crown doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

The G80 uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Crown uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

The engine in the G80 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Crown. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The G80’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Crown.

The G80 3.5T Sport Prestige has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Crown doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The G80’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Crown’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Consumer Reports rated the G80’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Crown’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

A power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades are standard in the G80 Advanced/Sport/Sport Prestige to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Crown doesn’t offer a rear or rear side window sunshades.

The G80’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Crown has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The G80 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the Crown Limited/Platinum.

The G80 Sport/Sport Prestige has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Crown.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 second among upper midsize premium cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Crown isn’t in the top three.
