In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the G80 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The A5 Sportback doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The G80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The A5 Sportback doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The G80 Sport Prestige has a standard Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The A5 Sportback doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

The G80 has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the A5 Sportback’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the G80 has standard Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist and automatically engage the brakes. Audi charges extra for Rear Cross-Traffic Assist on the A5 Sportback.

The G80’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The A5 Sportback doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the G80 and the A5 Sportback have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and available around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Genesis G80 is safer than the Audi A5 Sportback:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Genesis G80 is safer than the Audi A5 Sportback:

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, daytime pedestrian crash prevention, and nighttime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G80 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2023, a rating granted to only 50 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The A5 Sportback was last a “Top Safety Pick Plus” in 2019 but no longer qualifies.

Warranty

The G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The A5 Sportback’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G80 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Audi covers the A5 Sportback. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the A5 Sportback ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the G80 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Audi only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the A5 Sportback.

Reliability

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the G80 has a standard 850-amp battery. The A5 Sportback’s 420-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 first among upper midsize premium cars in their 2023 Initial Quality Study. The A5 Sportback isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis above average in initial quality. With 45 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 77 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 25th.

Engine

The G80 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 99 more horsepower (300 vs. 201) and 75 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 236) than the A5 Sportback 40 TFSI’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The G80 2.5T’s 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 39 more horsepower (300 vs. 261) and 38 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 273) than the A5 Sportback 45 TFSI’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The G80 3.5T’s standard 3.5 turbo V6 produces 114 more horsepower (375 vs. 261) and 118 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 273) than the A5 Sportback 45 TFSI’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

The G80 2.5T’s standard fuel tank has 1.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the A5 Sportback (17.2 vs. 15.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The G80 3.5T’s standard fuel tank has 4 gallons more fuel capacity than the A5 Sportback (19.3 vs. 15.3 gallons).

Transmission

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Genesis G80, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the A5 Sportback.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the G80’s brake rotors are larger than those on the A5 Sportback:

Tires and Wheels

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G80 3.5T Sport Prestige offers optional 20-inch wheels. The A5 Sportback’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G80’s wheelbase is 7.3 inches longer than on the A5 Sportback (118.5 inches vs. 111.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the G80 is 1.7 inches wider in the front and 3.2 inches wider in the rear than the track on the A5 Sportback.

The G80’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52% to 48%) than the A5 Sportback’s (54.8% to 45.2%). This gives the G80 more stable handling and braking.

Chassis

The design of the Genesis G80 amounts to more than styling. The G80 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .27 Cd. That is lower than the A5 Sportback (.3) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the G80 get better fuel mileage.

Passenger Space

The G80 has 12.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the A5 Sportback (103.8 vs. 91).

The G80 has 3.4 inches more front headroom, .9 inches more front legroom, 2.6 inches more front shoulder room, 1.2 inches more rear headroom, 3.6 inches more rear legroom and 2.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the A5 Sportback.

Cargo Capacity

With its sedan body style and remote trunk release lockout, the G80 offers cargo security. The A5 Sportback’s hatchback body style defeats cargo security.

Ergonomics

The G80’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The A5 Sportback doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

If the windows are left open on the G80 the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the A5 Sportback can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

A power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades are standard in the G80 Advanced/Sport/Sport Prestige to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The A5 Sportback doesn’t offer a rear or rear side window sunshades.

The G80 Sport/Sport Prestige has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the A5 Sportback.

The G80 Sport Prestige’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The A5 Sportback Prestige’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park and it doesn’t offer remote control parking.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 second among upper midsize premium cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The A5 Sportback isn’t in the top three in its category.
