The GR Corolla has standard Whiplash Injury Lessening Seats, which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash Injury Lessening Seats system allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The G70 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The GR Corolla has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The G70 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the GR Corolla. But it costs extra on the G70.

Both the GR Corolla and the G70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available rear parking sensors.

There are over 4 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GR Corolla’s warranty.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota first in overall reliability. Genesis is ranked 12th.

The GR Corolla’s 1.6 turbo 3-cylinder produces 48 more horsepower (300 vs. 252) and 13 lbs.-ft. more torque (273 vs. 260) than the G70 2.0T’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the GR Corolla gets better mileage than the G70:

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota GR Corolla higher (5 out of 10) than the Genesis G70 (3). This means the GR Corolla produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the G70 every 15,000 miles.

The GR Corolla offers a manual transmission for better acceleration, control and sportiness. The G70 doesn’t offer a manual transmission.

For better stopping power the GR Corolla’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the G70:

The GR Corolla’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the G70 2.0T are solid, not vented.

In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The GR Corolla has standard Brake Assist to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The G70 doesn’t offer a brake assist feature.

The GR Corolla stops shorter than the G70:

For better traction, the GR Corolla has larger tires than the G70 (235/40R18 vs. 225/40R19).

The GR Corolla Circuit Edition handles at .96 G’s, while the G70 Sport Advanced pulls only .89 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The GR Corolla Circuit Edition executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.1 seconds quicker than the G70 Sport Advanced (24.9 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 26 seconds @ .68 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the GR Corolla’s turning circle is .2 feet tighter than the G70’s (36.1 feet vs. 36.3 feet). The GR Corolla’s turning circle is 1.6 feet tighter than the G70 AWD’s (36.1 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

The Toyota GR Corolla may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 600 pounds less than the Genesis G70.

The GR Corolla is 10.8 inches shorter than the G70, making the GR Corolla easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The GR Corolla’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The G70 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

If the windows are left open on the GR Corolla the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the G70 can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the GR Corolla has a standard rear wiper. The G70 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The GR Corolla was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2023. The G70 hasn’t been picked since 2019.
