Compare the2024 Toyota SequoiaVS 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L

For enhanced safety, the front and second-row seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Sequoia have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Jeep Wagoneer L doesn’t offer pretensioners for its second-row seat belts.

The Sequoia has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Wagoneer L doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The Sequoia’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Wagoneer L.

Both the Sequoia and Wagoneer L have rear cross-traffic warning, but the Sequoia has Parking Support Brake (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Wagoneer L’s Rear Cross Path Detection doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Sequoia and the Wagoneer L have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available four-wheel drive.

The battery on the Sequoia is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the Sequoia’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The Wagoneer L’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Sequoia’s reliability 20 points higher than the Wagoneer L.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota above average in long-term dependability. With 34 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Jeep is rated below average.

The Sequoia’s 3.4 turbo V6 hybrid produces 17 more horsepower (437 vs. 420) and 115 lbs.-ft. more torque (583 vs. 468) than the Wagoneer L’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The Sequoia’s 3.4 turbo V6 hybrid produces 83 lbs.-ft. more torque (583 vs. 500) than the Grand Wagoneer L’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the Sequoia gets better mileage than the Wagoneer L:

Regenerative brakes improve the Sequoia’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Wagoneer L doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Toyota Sequoia, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Wagoneer L.

The Sequoia Capstone 4x4 handles at .76 G’s, while the Grand Wagoneer L 4x4 pulls only .74 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Sequoia’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the Wagoneer L’s (40.2 feet vs. 42.2 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Sequoia has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Wagoneer L (8.6 vs. 8.3 inches), allowing the Sequoia to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Toyota Sequoia may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 500 pounds less than the Jeep Wagoneer L.

The Sequoia is 1 foot, 6.6 inches shorter than the Wagoneer L, making the Sequoia easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Sequoia’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the liftgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Wagoneer L’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

The Sequoia has a higher standard payload capacity than the Wagoneer L (1555 vs. 1410 lbs.).

The Sequoia has a higher maximum payload capacity than the Wagoneer L (1730 vs. 1550 lbs.).

The Sequoia’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Wagoneer L’s standard power windows’ rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the Sequoia the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the Wagoneer L can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Sequoia first among large suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Wagoneer L isn’t in the top three.
