For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Land Rover Range Rover Velar have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The BMW X1 doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

Both the Range Rover Velar and X1 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Velar has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The X1’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Range Rover Velar. But it costs extra on the X1.

The Range Rover Velar offers an optional 3D Surround Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The X1 only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Range Rover Velar’s blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The X1 doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Range Rover Velar’s standard Rear Traffic Monitor uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side and Rear Traffic Braking automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. The X1 doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

Both the Range Rover Velar and the X1 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems and rearview cameras.

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar weighs 424 to 894 pounds more than the BMW X1. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Engine

The Range Rover Velar P250’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 19 more horsepower (247 vs. 228) and 11 lbs.-ft. more torque (269 vs. 258) than the X1’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Range Rover Velar P340’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 107 more horsepower (335 vs. 228) and 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (354 vs. 258) than the X1’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Range Rover Velar HST P400’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 167 more horsepower (395 vs. 228) and 148 lbs.-ft. more torque (406 vs. 258) than the X1’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Range Rover Velar has 5.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the X1 (21.7 vs. 16.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover Velar’s brake rotors are larger than those on the X1:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Range Rover Velar has larger standard tires than the X1 (255/50R20 vs. 225/50R18). The Range Rover Velar’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the X1 (265/45R21 vs. 225/50R18).

The Range Rover Velar’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the X1’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Velar has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the X1. The Range Rover Velar’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the X1.

The Range Rover Velar offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the X1; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare or run-flat tires, either of which has mileage and speed limitations.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover Velar offers an optional continuously variable suspension system. Using sensors on steering angle, speed and other driver inputs, the shocks soften to improve ride, or stiffen when appropriate to aid handling on tricky roads or off-road. The X1’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Range Rover Velar has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Range Rover Velar’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The X1 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Range Rover Velar’s wheelbase is 8 inches longer than on the X1 (113.1 inches vs. 105.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Range Rover Velar is 3.2 inches wider in the front and 3.7 inches wider in the rear than the track on the X1.

The Range Rover Velar’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50.1% to 49.9%) than the X1’s (56.6% to 43.4%). This gives the Range Rover Velar more stable handling and braking.

The Range Rover Velar Dynamic SE executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the X1 xDrive28i (26.2 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 26.8 seconds @ .65 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Velar has a 1.2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the X1 (8.4 vs. 7.2 inches), allowing the Range Rover Velar to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Velar w/Air Suspension’s minimum ground clearance is 2.7 inches higher than on the X1 (9.9 vs. 7.2 inches).

Passenger Space

The Range Rover Velar has 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear legroom and .4 inches more rear shoulder room than the X1.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover Velar has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the X1 with its rear seat up (30.9 vs. 27.1 cubic feet). The Range Rover Velar has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the X1 with its rear seat folded (62.7 vs. 58.7 cubic feet).

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the Range Rover Velar’s optional rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The X1 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Towing

The Range Rover Velar has a 5291 lbs. towing capacity. The X1 has no towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the Range Rover Velar uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The X1 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Range Rover Velar is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the X1. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

The Range Rover Velar has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The X1 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the X1, the Range Rover Velar has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Range Rover Velar’s standard Entry and Exit Mode raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The X1 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Range Rover Velar to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The X1 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Velar has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the X1 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The Range Rover Velar’s LED headlights produce a whiter, brighter light (up to 3x) using five times less power than the X1’s standard halogen headlights. LED lights also light instantly and last over twenty times longer than halogen.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover Velar offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The X1 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Range Rover Velar has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats cost extra on the X1. The Range Rover Velar also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the X1.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Range Rover Velar keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The X1 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Range Rover Velar has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the X1.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Land Rover Range Rover Velar has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the X1.

The Range Rover Velar’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The X1’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
