Safety

Both the F-Type and M4 have rear cross-traffic warning, but the F-Type has Rear Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The M4’s Cross Traffic Warning doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the F-Type and the M4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The F-Type comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The M4’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the F-Type for 2 years and 24,000 miles longer than BMW pays for maintenance for the M4 (5/60,000 vs. 3/36,000).

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jaguar vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jaguar above average in initial quality. With 7 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is rated lower.

Car and Driver

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the F-Type has larger rear tires than the M4 (305/30R20 vs. 285/35R19).

The F-Type’s 265/35R20 front and 305/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the M4’s standard 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the F-Type has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels are standard on the M4. The M4’s largest wheels are only 19-inches in the front and 20-inches in the rear.

Suspension and Handling

The F-Type’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The M4 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For better maneuverability, the F-Type’s turning circle is 5.1 feet tighter than the M4’s (34.9 feet vs. 40 feet). The F-Type AWD’s turning circle is 3 feet tighter than the M4’s (37 feet vs. 40 feet).

Chassis

The F-Type is 1 foot, 1.1 inches shorter than the M4, making the F-Type easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The F-Type Coupe has 1.1 inches more front legroom and 1.4 inches more front shoulder room than the M4 Coupe.

The F-Type Convertible has 1 inch more front legroom and 1.4 inches more front shoulder room than the M4 Convertible.

Cargo Capacity

The F-Type Coupe has a much larger trunk than the M4 Coupe (14.4 vs. 12 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the M4, the F-Type has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The F-Type’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The M4 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The F-Type has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The M4 doesn’t offer headlight washers.
