Power ranks Chevrolet above average in initial quality. With 28 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

The Silverado 1500’s 3.0 turbo diesel produces 89 lbs.-ft. more torque (495 vs. 406) than the Tundra SR’s standard 3.4 turbo V6. The Silverado 1500’s 3.0 turbo diesel produces 16 lbs.-ft. more torque (495 vs. 479) than the Tundra’s optional 3.4 turbo V6.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Silverado 1500 V8’s fuel efficiency. The Tundra doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 6.2 V8 engine for maximum performance). The Tundra requires premium, which can cost on average about 82.8 cents more per gallon.

The Silverado 1500 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Tundra doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

The Silverado 1500 stops shorter than the Tundra:

For better traction, the Silverado 1500 has larger standard tires than the Tundra (255/70R17 vs. 245/75R18).

The Silverado 1500’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 70 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Tundra SR’s standard 75 series tires.

The Silverado 1500 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Tundra doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its September 2023 issue and they ranked the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Short Box LT Trail Boss Crew Cab two places higher than the Toyota Tundra 5.5-foot bed TRD Pro Crew Cab Pickup.
