For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Nissan Titan have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The GMC Sierra Limited doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Nissan Titan are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The GMC Sierra Limited doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Nissan Titan has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Sierra Limited doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Titan has standard Rear Automatic Braking that use rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision. The Sierra Limited doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Titan’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Sierra Limited and is only available on Sierra Limited SLE/SLT/AT4/Denali.

The Titan has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the Sierra Limited’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Titan has standard Rear Cross Traffic Alert, helping the driver avoid collisions. GMC charges extra for Rear Cross Traffic Alert on the Sierra Limited.

The Titan’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Sierra Limited doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Titan and the Sierra Limited have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, daytime running lights and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Nissan Titan is safer than the GMC Sierra Limited:

Warranty

The Titan comes with a full 5-year/100,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Sierra Limited’s 3-year basic warranty expires 2 years or 64000 miles sooner.

The Titan’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Sierra Limited’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the Titan has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Sierra Limited.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Titan has a 200-amp alternator. The Sierra Limited’s standard 170-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Titan’s reliability 19 points higher than the Sierra Limited.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Titan second among large light duty pickups in their 2023 Initial Quality Study. The Sierra Limited isn’t in the top three.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Nissan 6 places higher in reliability than GMC.

Engine

The Titan’s 5.6 DOHC V8 produces 90 more horsepower (400 vs. 310) and 65 lbs.-ft. more torque (413 vs. 348) than the Sierra Limited’s standard 2.7 turbo 4-cylinder. The Titan’s 5.6 DOHC V8 produces 45 more horsepower (400 vs. 355) and 30 lbs.-ft. more torque (413 vs. 383) than the Sierra Limited’s optional 5.3 V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Titan gets better mileage than the Sierra Limited:

The Titan has 2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Sierra Limited Double/Crew Cab’s standard fuel tank (26 vs. 24 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better stopping power the Titan’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the Sierra Limited:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Titan has larger standard tires than the Sierra Limited (265/70R18 vs. 255/70R17).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Titan has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Sierra Limited.

Suspension and Handling

The Titan has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Titan flat and controlled during cornering. The Sierra Limited’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The Titan has engine speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Sierra Limited doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

Chassis

The Titan is shorter than the Sierra Limited, making the Titan easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces:

The front grille of the Titan uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Sierra Limited doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Titan Crew Cab has .3 inches more rear headroom and .1 inches more rear hip room than the Sierra Limited Crew Cab.

Cargo Capacity

The Nissan Titan has a standard tailgate assist feature, which prevents the heavy tailgate from falling with a crash and causing injury. It allows adults and children to easily open and close the tailgate with one hand to better facilitate loading and unloading. Tailgate assist costs extra on the GMC Sierra Limited.

Both the Titan and Sierra Limited have bed indentations that accommodate 2x4’s for two-tiered loading, but the Titan also has indentations to separate the cargo box into three different sections length-wise.

Towing

The Titan’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Sierra Limited’s (9130 vs. 7400 pounds).

While the Sierra 1500 Limited Short Bed Crew Cab 4x4 can only tow 6600, any Titan can tow a minimum of 9130 pounds.

Ergonomics

The Titan’s standard power windows allow the driver or passenger to lower and raise the windows without leaning over or being distracted. Power windows cost extra on the Sierra Limited.

The Titan’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Sierra Limited’s basic optional power windows’ front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

If the front windows are left open on the Titan the driver can close them at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Sierra Limited can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Titan’s standard power locks allow the driver or passenger to lock or unlock all the doors at a touch without leaning over. Power locks cost extra on the Sierra Limited.

The Titan’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Sierra Limited’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The Titan’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.

The Titan has standard power remote mirrors. The Sierra Limited only comes with remote mirrors at extra cost. Without them the driver will have to roll down the windows and reach across the car to adjust the mirrors.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Titan owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Titan with a number “8” insurance rate while the Sierra Limited is rated higher at a number “10” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Titan is less expensive to operate than the Sierra Limited because it costs $164 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost less on the Titan than the Sierra Limited, including $67 less for a water pump, $169 less for a muffler, $91 less for front brake pads, $90 less for fuel injection, $65 less for a fuel pump and $20 less for a power steering pump.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Titan first among large light duty pickups in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Sierra Limited was rated third.

Motor Trend selected the Titan as their 2017 Truck of the Year. The Sierra Limited has never been chosen.
