From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that GMC vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks GMC 2 places higher in reliability than Volkswagen.

The Hummer EV SUV’s standard electric motors produces 424 more horsepower (625 vs. 201) and 7171 lbs.-ft. more torque (7400 vs. 229) than the ID.4’s standard electric motor. The Hummer EV SUV’s electric motors produces 330 more horsepower (625 vs. 295) and 7061 lbs.-ft. more torque (7400 vs. 339) than the ID.4’s optional electric motors. The Hummer EV SUV 3X’s standard electric motors produces 535 more horsepower (830 vs. 295) and 11161 lbs.-ft. more torque (11500 vs. 339) than the ID.4’s optional electric motors.

The Hummer EV SUV’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The ID.4 doesn’t offer launch control.

The GMC Hummer EV SUV has standard four-wheel disc brakes for better stopping power and improved directional control in poor weather. Only rear drums come on the ID.4. Drums can heat up and make stops longer, especially with antilock brakes that work much harder than conventional brakes.

For better traction, the Hummer EV SUV has larger tires than the ID.4 (305/55R22 vs. 235/55R19).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Hummer EV SUV has standard 22-inch wheels. The ID.4’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The GMC Hummer EV SUV’s wheels have 8 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Volkswagen ID.4 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Hummer EV SUV has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the ID.4; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The Hummer EV SUV offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The ID.4’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Hummer EV SUV 2X/3X has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Hummer EV SUV’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The ID.4 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Hummer EV SUV’s wheelbase is 18 inches longer than on the ID.4 (126.7 inches vs. 108.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Hummer EV SUV is 11 inches wider in the front and 11.9 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the ID.4.

For greater off-road capability the Hummer EV SUV 2 has a 3.4 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the ID.4 (10.2 vs. 6.8 inches), allowing the Hummer EV SUV to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Hummer EV SUV 2X/3X Extract’s minimum ground clearance is 9.2 inches higher than on the ID.4 (16 vs. 6.8 inches).

The front grille of the Hummer EV SUV uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The ID.4 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Hummer EV SUV has 1.9 inches more front headroom, 4.5 inches more front legroom, 6.1 inches more front hip room, 6.4 inches more front shoulder room, .5 inches more rear headroom, 1.4 inches more rear legroom, 13.5 inches more rear hip room and 8.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the ID.4.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Hummer EV SUV’s rear seats recline. The ID.4’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Hummer EV SUV has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the ID.4 with its rear seat up (35.9 vs. 30.3 cubic feet). The Hummer EV SUV has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the ID.4 with its rear seat folded (81.8 vs. 64.2 cubic feet).

The Hummer EV SUV’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the right swing out door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The ID.4’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

The Hummer EV SUV’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the ID.4’s (6000 vs. 2200 pounds).

The Hummer EV SUV uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The ID.4 uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield, the Hummer EV SUV has standard extendable sun visors. The ID.4 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Hummer EV SUV’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The ID.4 has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Hummer EV SUV keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The ID.4 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Hummer EV SUV has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the ID.4 S/Pro S/Pro S Plus.

The Hummer EV SUV has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The ID.4 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Hummer EV SUV’s Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The ID.4’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
