Buick’s powertrain warranty covers the Envista 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the XC40. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the XC40 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.
There are almost 7 times as many Buick dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Envista’s warranty.
Reliability
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Buick vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Buick fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 88 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 32nd, below the industry average.
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Buick vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Buick second in reliability, above the industry average. With 109 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 30th.
From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Buick vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Buick 3 places higher in reliability than Volvo.
Fuel Economy and Range
On the EPA test cycle the Envista gets better fuel mileage than the XC40 T5 (28 city/32 hwy vs. 24 city/30 hwy).
To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Buick Envista uses regular unleaded gasoline. The XC40 requires premium, which can cost on average about 82.8 cents more per gallon.
Environmental Friendliness
In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Buick Envista higher (7 out of 10) than the Volvo XC40 (5). This means the Envista produces up to 8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XC40 every 15,000 miles.
Tires and Wheels
The Envista has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The XC40 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.
Suspension and Handling
The Envista Sport Touring handles at .80 G’s, while the XC40 B5 Plus pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.
Chassis

The Envista uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The XC40 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Envista has .4 inches more front headroom, 1 inch more front legroom and 2.6 inches more rear legroom than the XC40.

Ergonomics
In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Envista’s available exterior PIN entry system. The XC40 doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its Volvo On Call can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.
