The M8’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Portofino doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The BMW M8 has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Portofino doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The M8 has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Portofino doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The M8 offers an optional Active Park Distance Control that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Portofino doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The M8 has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Portofino doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The M8’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Portofino.

The M8 comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Portofino’s 3-year basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.

In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The M8 has a standard Brake Assistant to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The M8 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Portofino doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The M8 has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Portofino doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The M8’s standard power window controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The Portofino’s available power window controls are spread out on the center console where they can’t be seen without the driver completely removing his eyes from the road.

If the windows are left open on the M8 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Portofino can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Comfort Access standard on the M8 allows you to unlock the doors, trunk and start the engine all without removing a key from pocket or purse. This eliminates searching for keys before loading groceries, getting in the vehicle in bad weather or making a hurried start to your trip. The Ferrari Portofino’s Keyless Entry and Ignition doesn’t unlock the trunk.

Laser headlights, standard on the M8, produce their light by firing blue lasers through phosphorus, a process that uses one-half the power of the Portofino’s LED headlights. Laser headlights can have double the range of LEDs with a much smaller surface area.

A power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades are standard in the M8 Gran Coupe to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Portofino doesn’t offer a rear or rear side window sunshades.

Both the M8 and the Portofino have standard heated front seats. The M8 also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Portofino.

On extremely cold winter days, the M8’s standard heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The Portofino doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

For greater rear passenger comfort, the M8 has standard rear a/c vents to keep rear occupants more comfortable. The Portofino doesn’t offer rear vents.

The M8’s standard steering wheel mounted cruise control on/off switch is conveniently located with the rest of the cruise controls. The Portofino’s standard cruise control must be turned on with a hard to find switch on the dashboard.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the BMW M8 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The Portofino doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The M8’s optional Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Portofino doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
