For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW i7 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Ioniq 5’s standard Downhill Brake Control allows you to creep down safely. The i7 doesn’t offer Downhill Brake Control.

Both the Ioniq 5 and the i7 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2024 model year. This recognition was based on its impressive performance in the small overlap frontal crash test, updated side impact crash test, headlight evaluations, and pedestrian crash prevention testing. The i7 has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

Warranty

The Ioniq 5 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The i7’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Ioniq 5 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than BMW covers the i7. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the i7 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 2 times as many Hyundai dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Ioniq 5’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai above average in initial quality. With 4 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is rated lower.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 39 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is ranked 15th.

The Ioniq 5 Long Range RWD can travel longer on a full charge than the i7 eDrive50 with 20" Wheels (303 miles vs. 301 miles).

Tires and Wheels

The Ioniq 5 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The i7 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Ioniq 5’s turning circle is 1.1 feet tighter than the i7’s (39.3 feet vs. 40.4 feet).

Chassis

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1450 to 1900 pounds less than the BMW i7.

The Ioniq 5 is 2 feet, 5.7 inches shorter than the i7, making the Ioniq 5 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Ioniq 5 has .5 inches more front legroom, .1 inches more rear headroom and 1.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the i7.

Cargo Capacity

The Ioniq 5’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The i7 doesn’t offer folding rear seats, only a ski pass-through.

Towing

The Ioniq 5 offers up to a 2300 lbs. towing capacity. The i7 has no towing capacity.

Recommendations

The Ioniq 5 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2023 and 2022. The i7 has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 outsold the BMW i7 by over three to one during 2023.
