Compare the2024 Genesis GV80VS 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Both the GV80 and Outlander PHEV have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The GV80 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Outlander PHEV’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Both the GV80 and Outlander PHEV have rear cross-traffic warning, but the GV80 has Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Outlander PHEV’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the GV80 and the Outlander PHEV have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, front seat center airbag, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The GV80’s 7 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the Outlander PHEV runs out after 100,000 miles.

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the GV80 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Mitsubishi doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Outlander PHEV.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Mitsubishi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis above average in initial quality. With 17 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mitsubishi is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Mitsubishi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 28 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mitsubishi is ranked 14th.

The GV80 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 52 more horsepower (300 vs. 248) than the Outlander PHEV’s 2.4 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid. The GV80 3.5T’s standard 3.5 turbo V6 produces 127 more horsepower (375 vs. 248) and 59 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 332) than the Outlander PHEV’s 2.4 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Genesis GV80 is faster than the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV:

The GV80 has 6.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Outlander PHEV (21.1 vs. 14.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better stopping power the GV80’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Outlander PHEV:

The GV80’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Outlander PHEV are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the GV80 has larger tires than the Outlander PHEV (265/40R22 vs. 235/60R18). The GV80’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Outlander PHEV (265/40R22 vs. 255/45R20).

The GV80’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Outlander PHEV’s standard 60 series tires. The GV80’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Outlander PHEV SE/SEL’s 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GV80 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Outlander PHEV. The GV80’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels on the Outlander PHEV SE/SEL.

The GV80 5-Passenger has a standard space-saver spare (not available on 7-Passenger/Prestige) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Outlander PHEV; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The GV80 offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Outlander PHEV’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The GV80 offers an optional automatic rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GV80’s wheelbase is 9.8 inches longer than on the Outlander PHEV (116.3 inches vs. 106.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GV80 is 3.2 inches wider in the front and 3.5 inches wider in the rear than on the Outlander PHEV.

The GV80 Prestige handles at .86 G’s, while the Outlander PHEV SEL Premium pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For greater off-road capability the GV80 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Outlander PHEV (8.1 vs. 7.8 inches), allowing the GV80 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

For excellent aerodynamics, the GV80 has standard flush composite headlights. The Outlander PHEV has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The GV80 Prestige uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The GV80 has 14.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Outlander PHEV (140 vs. 125.5).

The GV80 has 2.3 inches more front shoulder room, .6 inches more rear legroom, 2.3 inches more rear shoulder room, 1.2 inches more third row headroom, 11.2 inches more third row legroom and 2 inches more third row shoulder room than the Outlander PHEV.

The GV80’s cargo area provides more volume than the Outlander PHEV.

Both the GV80 and the Outlander PHEV have standard second row automatic folding seats. The GV80’s third row seats also fold up or down at the press of a button. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer automatic folding third row seats.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the GV80. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The GV80’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Outlander PHEV’s (6000 vs. 1500 pounds).

The GV80 uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Outlander PHEV uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

The engine in the GV80 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Outlander PHEV. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The power windows standard on both the GV80 and the Outlander PHEV have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the GV80 is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Outlander PHEV prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The GV80’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Outlander PHEV’s standard passenger windows don’t open or close automatically.

If the windows are left open on the GV80 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Outlander PHEV can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The GV80’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Outlander PHEV’s power window, power lock and power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The GV80’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Outlander PHEV’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

The GV80’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Mitsubishi only offers heated mirrors on the Outlander PHEV SE/SEL.

The GV80’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Outlander PHEV offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Optional air conditioned front and second row seats keep the GV80’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The GV80 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Outlander PHEV.

A built-in pollen filter removes pollen, exhaust fumes and other pollutants from the GV80’s passenger compartment. This helps prevent lung and/or sinus irritation which can trigger allergies or asthma. The Outlander PHEV’s air conditioner doesn’t offer a filtration system.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Genesis GV80 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console and one for the rear passengers. Only the Outlander PHEV SE/SEL offers wireless charging.

The GV80’s optional Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Optional Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The GV80 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2021. The Outlander PHEV has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.
