Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Hyundai Kona N are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar F-Pace doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Kona N are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The F-Pace doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Compared to metal, the Kona N’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Jaguar F-Pace has a metal gas tank.

Both the Kona N and the F-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Kona N the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 231 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The F-Pace has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Kona N 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Jaguar covers the F-Pace. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the F-Pace ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Kona N’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the F-Pace’s (7 vs. 6 years).

There are over 4 times as many Hyundai dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Kona N’s warranty.

Reliability

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Kona N has a standard 150-amp alternator. The F-Pace’s 130-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 85 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 26th.

Engine

The Kona N’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 30 more horsepower (276 vs. 246) and 20 lbs.-ft. more torque (289 vs. 269) than the F-Pace P250’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Kona N gets better mileage than the F-Pace:

The Kona N has a standard locking fuel door. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the F-Pace. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

Transmission

The Kona N offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The F-Pace doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

The Kona N’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The F-Pace doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Kona N’s standard front brake rotors are larger than those on the F-Pace:

Tires and Wheels

The Kona N’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the F-Pace’s standard 55 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Kona N handles at .95 G’s, while the F-Pace pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Kona N’s turning circle is .9 feet tighter than the F-Pace’s (38.3 feet vs. 39.2 feet).

Chassis

The Hyundai Kona N may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 1200 pounds less than the Jaguar F-Pace.

The Kona N is 1 foot, 9 inches shorter than the F-Pace, making the Kona N easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Kona N is 10.6 inches narrower than the F-Pace, making the Kona N easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Kona N is quieter than the F-Pace SVR:

F-Pace

Full-Throttle

79 dB

87 dB

Passenger Space

The front step up height for the Kona N is 3.2 inches lower than the F-Pace (16” vs. 19.2”). The Kona N’s rear step up height is 3.7 inches lower than the F-Pace’s (16.1” vs. 19.8”).

Cargo Capacity

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Kona N easier. The Kona N’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 27.5 inches, while the F-Pace’s liftover is 30.5 inches.

Ergonomics

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Kona N has standard extendable sun visors. The F-Pace doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Recommendations

The Kona was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2019. The F-Pace has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.

The Hyundai Kona outsold the Jaguar F-Pace by over 11 to one during 2022.
