Safety

Compared to metal, the Kona N’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Genesis GV70 has a metal gas tank.

Both the Kona N and the GV70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

There are almost 3 times as many Hyundai dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Kona N’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 7 more problems per 100 vehicles, Genesis is ranked fourth.

Tires and Wheels

The Kona N’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GV70’s standard 55 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Kona N has variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The GV70 doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

The Kona N handles at .95 G’s, while the GV70 Advanced pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

Chassis

The Hyundai Kona N may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 850 to 1250 pounds less than the Genesis GV70.

The Kona N is 1 foot, 7.7 inches shorter than the GV70, making the Kona N easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The front step up height for the Kona N is 1.5 inches lower than the GV70 (16” vs. 17.5”). The Kona N’s rear step up height is 1.2 inches lower than the GV70’s (16.1” vs. 17.3”).

Cargo Capacity

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Kona N easier. The Kona N’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 27.5 inches, while the GV70’s liftover is 29.9 inches.

Ergonomics

The Kona N has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GV70 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Recommendations

The Hyundai Kona outsold the Genesis GV70 by over three to one during 2022.
