For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Volvo V90 Cross Country have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Toyota Venza doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The V90 Cross Country’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Venza doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the V90 Cross Country and Venza have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The V90 Cross Country has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Venza’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Volvo V90 Cross Country offers optional built in child booster seats. They’re more crash worthy than an added child seat because of their direct attachment to the seat. Toyota doesn’t offer the convenience and security of a built-in child booster seat in the Venza. Their owners must carry a heavy booster seat in and out of the vehicle; V90 Cross Country owners can just fold their built-in child seat up or down.

The V90 Cross Country has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The Venza doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the V90 Cross Country’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The Venza doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the V90 Cross Country has standard Cross Traffic Alert with Braking Intervention, systems which detect vehicles approaching from the sides and can automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision. Only the Venza XLE/Nightshade/Limited offers Parking Support Brake.

Both the V90 Cross Country and the Venza have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The V90 Cross Country comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Venza’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The V90 Cross Country’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the Venza’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the V90 Cross Country for 1 year and 11000 miles longer than Toyota pays for maintenance for the Venza (3/36,000 vs. 2/25000).

Engine

The V90 Cross Country Plus’ standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid produces 76 more horsepower (295 vs. 219) than the Venza’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Volvo V90 Cross Country is faster than the Toyota Venza:

Fuel Economy and Range

Both the V90 Cross Country and Venza have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. The V90 Cross Country has a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

The V90 Cross Country has 1.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the Venza (15.9 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The V90 Cross Country has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Venza doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the V90 Cross Country’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Venza:

The V90 Cross Country’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Venza are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the V90 Cross Country has larger standard tires than the Venza (235/50R19 vs. 225/60R18). The V90 Cross Country’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Venza (245/45R20 vs. 225/60R18).

The V90 Cross Country’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Venza LE’s standard 60 series tires. The V90 Cross Country’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Venza XLE/Nightshade/Limited’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the V90 Cross Country has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Venza LE. The V90 Cross Country’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels on the Venza XLE/Nightshade/Limited.

Suspension and Handling

The V90 Cross Country offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The Venza’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The V90 Cross Country has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Venza doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the V90 Cross Country’s wheelbase is 9.9 inches longer than on the Venza (115.8 inches vs. 105.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the V90 Cross Country is 2.1 inches wider in the front and 1 inch wider in the rear than the track on the Venza.

The V90 Cross Country Plus handles at .87 G’s, while the Venza Limited pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The V90 Cross Country Plus executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the Venza Limited (26.4 seconds @ .68 average G’s vs. 27.7 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

Passenger Space

The V90 Cross Country has 1.3 inches more front legroom, 2 inches more front hip room, .1 inches more front shoulder room and 10.5 inches more rear hip room than the Venza.

Cargo Capacity

The V90 Cross Country has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Venza with its rear seat folded (69 vs. 55.1 cubic feet).

The V90 Cross Country’s cargo area is larger than the Venza’s in almost every dimension:

A control in the cargo area automatically lowers or raises the V90 Cross Country’s rear seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Venza doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Towing

The V90 Cross Country has a 2000 lbs. towing capacity. The Venza has no towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the V90 Cross Country uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Venza doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Servicing Ease

The V90 Cross Country uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Venza uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

Ergonomics

The V90 Cross Country has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Venza doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Venza XLE/Nightshade/Limited, the V90 Cross Country Ultimate has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The V90 Cross Country’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Venza’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the V90 Cross Country to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Venza doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The V90 Cross Country offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Venza doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the V90 Cross Country has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Venza doesn’t offer cornering lights. The V90 Cross Country also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the V90 Cross Country to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Venza doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the V90 Cross Country is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Venza’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The V90 Cross Country’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Venza offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The V90 Cross Country has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats are only available on the Venza XLE/Nightshade/Limited. The V90 Cross Country also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Venza.

The V90 Cross Country has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the Venza Limited.

The V90 Cross Country Ultimate has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Venza.

The V90 Cross Country offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Venza doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The V90 Cross Country’s optional Park Assist Pilot can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Venza doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
