Both the Grand Highlander and the CX-90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Highlander for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Mazda doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the CX-90.

There are over 2 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Mazda dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Highlander’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Mazda vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota above average in long-term dependability. With 34 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Mazda is rated lower.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Mazda vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in overall reliability. Mazda is ranked 7th.

The Grand Highlander Hybrid Max’s 2.4 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 22 more horsepower (362 vs. 340) and 31 lbs.-ft. more torque (400 vs. 369) than the CX-90 Turbo S’ optional 3.3 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max 2.4 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid is faster than the CX-90 Turbo S:

The Grand Highlander offers an available continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The CX-90 doesn’t offer a CVT.

For better stopping power the Grand Highlander’s standard front brake rotors are larger than those on the CX-90:

The Grand Highlander Platinum AWD handles at .80 G’s, while the CX-90 Premium Plus pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Toyota Grand Highlander may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 400 pounds less than the Mazda CX-90.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Grand Highlander Platinum AWD is quieter than the CX-90 Premium Plus:

The Grand Highlander has 1.8 inches more front headroom, 1 inch more front shoulder room, .9 inches more rear headroom, .1 inches more rear legroom, .7 inches more rear shoulder room, .3 inches more third row headroom, 3.1 inches more third row legroom and 4.2 inches more third row shoulder room than the CX-90.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Grand Highlander’s middle and third row seats recline. The CX-90’s third row seats don’t recline.

The Grand Highlander’s cargo area provides more volume than the CX-90.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Grand Highlander. The CX-90 doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Grand Highlander’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the CX-90’s (5000 vs. 3500 pounds).

The power windows standard on both the Grand Highlander and the CX-90 have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Grand Highlander is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The CX-90 prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

If the windows are left open on the Grand Highlander the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the CX-90 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Toyota Grand Highlander has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the CX-90.

The Grand Highlander is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The CX-90 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
