For enhanced safety, the front and second-row seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes EQB have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The MINI Cooper SE doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The EQB’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes EQB are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The MINI Cooper SE doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The EQB offers all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the EQB’s standard Downhill Speed Regulation allows you to creep down safely. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer Downhill Speed Regulation.

The EQB offers an optional Surround View System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Cooper SE only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The EQB’s blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the EQB’s standard Rear Cross-Traffic Alert uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side and Active Brake Assist automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

Both the EQB and the Cooper SE have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front wheel drive, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors and available lane departure warning systems.

The Mercedes EQB weighs 1354 to 1575 pounds more than the MINI Cooper SE. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts. Crosswinds also affect lighter cars more.

Warranty

There are almost 4 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are MINI dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the EQB’s warranty.

Engine

The EQB 250+’s standard electric motor produces 7 more horsepower (188 vs. 181) and 85 lbs.-ft. more torque (284 vs. 199) than the Cooper SE’s electric motor. The EQB 300’s standard electric motor produces 44 more horsepower (225 vs. 181) and 89 lbs.-ft. more torque (288 vs. 199) than the Cooper SE’s electric motor. The EQB 350’s standard electric motor produces 107 more horsepower (288 vs. 181) and 185 lbs.-ft. more torque (384 vs. 199) than the Cooper SE’s electric motor.

As tested in Car and Driver the EQB 350 is faster than the MINI Cooper SE:

For better stopping power the EQB’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Cooper SE:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the EQB has larger tires than the Cooper SE (235/50R19 vs. 195/55R16). The EQB’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Cooper SE (235/50R19 vs. 205/45R17).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the EQB has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 16-inch wheels are standard on the Cooper SE. The EQB’s optional 19-inch wheels are larger than the 17-inch wheels on the Cooper SE Signature Plus/Iconic.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the EQB can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

The EQB’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the EQB’s wheelbase is 13.1 inches longer than on the Cooper SE (111.3 inches vs. 98.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the EQB is 4 inches wider in the front and 3.6 inches wider in the rear than on the Cooper SE.

Passenger Space

The EQB offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Cooper SE can only carry 4.

The EQB has .4 inches more front headroom, 5.3 inches more front shoulder room, 2.4 inches more rear headroom, 7.3 inches more rear legroom and 7.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the Cooper SE.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the EQB’s middle row seats recline. The Cooper SE’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The EQB’s cargo area provides more volume than the Cooper SE.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the EQB. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the EQB has a standard power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button, or optionally by just kicking your foot under the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer a power liftgate.

Ergonomics

When three different drivers share the EQB, the memory system makes it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver and front passenger’s seat positions, suspension setting, power steering assist, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer a memory system.

The EQB’s standard easy entry and exit feature glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The EQB’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. MINI does not offer a locking feature on the Cooper SE’s standard power windows.

The Cooper SE’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The EQB’s optional adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the EQB keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The EQB has a standard center folding armrest for the middle row passengers. A center armrest helps make middle row passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.

The EQB offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Cooper SE.

For greater rear passenger comfort, the EQB has standard rear a/c vents to keep rear occupants more comfortable. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer rear vents.

The EQB offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Cooper SE doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The EQB’s Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Cooper SE’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
