2023 BMW XM
2023 VinFast VF 9

Safety

The XM’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The VF 9 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the XM are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The VF 9 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the XM’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The VF 9 doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

Both the XM and VF 9 have rear cross-traffic warning, but the XM has Cross Traffic Warning with braking function (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The VF 9’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the XM and the VF 9 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The XM’s corrosion warranty is 2 years and unlimited miles longer than the VF 9’s (12/unlimited vs. 10/125000).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the XM for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. VinFast doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the VF 9.

Engine

The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 242 more horsepower (644 vs. 402) and 133 lbs.-ft. more torque (590 vs. 457) than the VF 9’s electric motors.

Fuel Economy and Range

The XM has a standard locking fuel door and a locking charge port with a power remote release convenient to the driver and which locks and unlocks with the power locks, respectively. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and a locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

Transmission

The XM’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The VF 9 doesn’t offer launch control.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the XM has larger rear tires than the VF 9 (315/30R23 vs. 275/45R20). The XM’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the VF 9 (315/30R23 vs. 285/35R22).

The XM’s standard 315/40R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the VF 9’s standard 45 series tires. The XM’s optional 315/30R23 rear tires have a lower 30 series profile than the VF 9’s optional 35 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XM has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 20-inch wheels are standard on the VF 9. The XM’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 22-inch wheels optional on the VF 9.

The XM has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the VF 9; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The XM has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The VF 9 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The rear suspension of the XM uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the VF 9, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The XM offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. VinFast doesn’t offer an active suspension on the VF 9.

The XM has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The VF 9’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For greater off-road capability the XM has a greater minimum ground clearance than the VF 9 (8.7 vs. 7.8 inches), allowing the XM to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The front grille of the XM uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The VF 9 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Towing

Standard Trailer Stabilization Control on the XM uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The VF 9 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

The XM has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The VF 9 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Unlike the driver-only memory seat in the VF 9 Plus, the XM has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The VF 9’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The XM’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.
