The XM’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The F-Pace doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the XM are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The F-Pace doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The BMW XM has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The F-Pace doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The XM has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The F-Pace doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The XM has a standard Active Park Distance Control that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The F-Pace doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

Both the XM and the F-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The BMW XM weighs 1528 to 2048 pounds more than the Jaguar F-Pace. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The XM’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the F-Pace’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are over 84 percent more BMW dealers than there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the XM’s warranty.

Power ranks BMW above average in initial quality. With 45 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is rated below average.

The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 398 more horsepower (644 vs. 246) and 321 lbs.-ft. more torque (590 vs. 269) than the F-Pace P250’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 249 more horsepower (644 vs. 395) and 184 lbs.-ft. more torque (590 vs. 406) than the F-Pace R-Dynamic S’ standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid. The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 102 more horsepower (644 vs. 542) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (590 vs. 516) than the F-Pace SVR’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8.

The XM can travel with zero emissions for 31 miles. The F-Pace can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

The XM has a standard locking fuel door and a locking charge port with a power remote release convenient to the driver and which locks and unlocks with the power locks, respectively. The F-Pace doesn’t offer a locking fuel filler door. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and a locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW XM higher (7 out of 10) than the Jaguar F-Pace (3 to 7). This means the XM produces up to 24.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the F-Pace every 15,000 miles.

The XM’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The F-Pace doesn’t offer launch control.

For better traction, the XM has larger tires than the F-Pace (F:275/35R23 & R:315/30R23 vs. 255/55R19). The XM’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the F-Pace (F:275/35R23 & R:315/30R23 vs. F:265/45R21 & R:295/40R21).

The XM’s standard 275/45R21 front and 315/40R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series front and 40 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the F-Pace’s standard 55 series tires. The XM’s optional 275/35R23 front and 315/30R23 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the F-Pace SVR’s optional 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XM has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the F-Pace. The XM’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 22-inch wheels optional on the F-Pace.

The XM has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The F-Pace doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The rear suspension of the XM uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the F-Pace, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The XM offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Jaguar doesn’t offer an active suspension on the F-Pace.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XM’s wheelbase is 9.1 inches longer than on the F-Pace (122.2 inches vs. 113.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the XM is 3.3 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the F-Pace.

For greater off-road capability the XM has a greater minimum ground clearance than the F-Pace (8.7 vs. 8.4 inches), allowing the XM to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The XM’s minimum ground clearance is .1 inch higher than on the F-Pace SVR (8.7 vs. 8.6 inches).

The front grille of the XM uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The F-Pace doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The XM has .7 inches more front headroom, .1 inches more front legroom, 2.6 inches more front shoulder room, .3 inches more rear headroom, 3.1 inches more rear legroom and 1.7 inches more rear shoulder room than the F-Pace.

The XM’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the F-Pace, and is not available on all models.

The XM’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The F-Pace’s power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the XM has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The F-Pace doesn’t offer cornering lights. The XM also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the XM has standard extendable sun visors. The F-Pace doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The XM has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the F-Pace.

The XM’s Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The F-Pace SVR’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
