The Range Rover Sport’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Macan doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the Range Rover Sport and Macan have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Sport has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Macan’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the Macan’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Range Rover Sport’s standard Rear Traffic Monitor uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side and Rear Traffic Braking automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. The Macan doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

The Range Rover Sport’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Macan doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the Macan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems and rearview cameras.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport weighs 590 to 1709 pounds more than the Porsche Macan. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Land Rover vehicles are better in initial quality than Porsche vehicles. With 7 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Land Rover higher than Porsche.

The Range Rover Sport P440e can travel with zero emissions for 48 miles. The Macan can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

The Range Rover Sport P440e’s standard fuel tank has 1.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Macan (18.9 vs. 17.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Range Rover Sport’s standard fuel tank has 6.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Macan (23.8 vs. 17.1 gallons).

Transmission

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the Macan.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover Sport’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Macan:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Range Rover Sport has larger standard tires than the Macan (275/50R21 vs. 235/55R19). The Range Rover Sport’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Macan (285/45R23 vs. 265/40R21).

The Range Rover Sport’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Macan’s standard 55 series front tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Sport has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the Macan. The Range Rover Sport’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 21-inch wheels optional on the Macan.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Macan; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Macan doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover Sport uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Macan, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Porsche doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Macan.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Range Rover Sport’s wheelbase is 7.5 inches longer than on the Macan (118 inches vs. 110.5 inches).

The Range Rover Sport’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52% to 48%) than the Macan’s (55.7% to 44.3%). This gives the Range Rover Sport more stable handling and braking.

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Sport w/Rear Wheel Steering’s turning circle is 3.3 feet tighter than the Macan’s (35.9 feet vs. 39.2 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport has a 3.2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Macan (11.1 vs. 7.9 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Sport’s minimum ground clearance is 2.2 inches higher than on the Macan (11.1 vs. 8.9 inches).

Chassis

The design of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover Sport has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is significantly lower than the Macan (.35 to .37) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover Sport get better fuel mileage.

The Range Rover Sport uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Macan doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Range Rover Sport’s rear seats recline. The Macan’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover Sport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Macan with its rear seat up (31.9 vs. 17.2 cubic feet). The Range Rover Sport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Macan with its rear seat folded (66 vs. 52.9 cubic feet).

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Range Rover Sport’s rear seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Macan doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Range Rover Sport’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by waving your foot, leaving your hands completely free. The Macan doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Towing

The Range Rover Sport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Macan’s (7716 vs. 4409 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Range Rover Sport has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Macan doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard Entry and Exit Mode raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Macan.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Macan doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

On a hot day the Range Rover Sport’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Macan can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Range Rover Sport to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Macan doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Sport has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Macan only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover Sport has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Macan doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Range Rover Sport offers optional dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The Macan doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

A manual rear sunshade is standard in the Range Rover Sport to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Macan doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

Optional air conditioned front and rear seats keep the Range Rover Sport’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Macan doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Macan.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Macan.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Macan doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Macan’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
