For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Maserati Levante doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The Range Rover Sport’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Levante doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the Range Rover Sport and Levante have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Sport has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Levante’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Levante.

Both the Range Rover Sport and Levante have rear cross-traffic warning, but the Range Rover Sport has Rear Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Levante’s Rear Cross Path doesn’t automatically brake.

The Range Rover Sport’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Levante doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the Levante have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Range Rover Sport’s corrosion warranty is 2 years and unlimited miles longer than the Levante’s (6/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

There are over 70 percent more Land Rover dealers than there are Maserati dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Range Rover Sport’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Land Rover vehicles are better in initial quality than Maserati vehicles. With 62 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Land Rover higher than Maserati.

Engine

The Range Rover Sport P530’s 4.4 turbo V8 produces 15 lbs.-ft. more torque (553 vs. 538) than the Levante Trofeo’s optional 3.8 turbo V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Range Rover Sport running its gasoline engine gets better mileage than the Levante:

The Range Rover Sport P440e can travel with zero emissions for 48 miles. The Levante can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the Range Rover Sport’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Levante doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard fuel tank has 2.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Levante (23.8 vs. 21.1 gallons).

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Land Rover Range Rover Sport higher (5 to 7 out of 10) than the Maserati Levante (1 to 3). This means the Range Rover Sport produces up to 47 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Levante every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover Sport’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Levante:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Range Rover Sport has larger standard tires than the Levante (275/50R21 vs. 265/45R20). The Range Rover Sport’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Levante (285/45R23 vs. 265/45R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Sport has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 20-inch wheels are standard on the Levante Modena/S. The Range Rover Sport’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 22-inch wheels optional on the Levante.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Levante; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Levante doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Maserati doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Levante.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Range Rover Sport is 2.8 inches wider in the front and .6 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Levante.

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Sport w/Rear Wheel Steering’s turning circle is 5.3 feet tighter than the Levante’s (35.9 feet vs. 41.2 feet). The Range Rover Sport’s turning circle is .1 feet tighter than the Levante’s (41.1 feet vs. 41.2 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport has a 1.4 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Levante (11.1 vs. 9.7 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The design of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover Sport has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is lower than the Levante (.31 to .33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover Sport get better fuel mileage.

The Range Rover Sport uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Levante doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Range Rover Sport SE is quieter than the Levante Modena:

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover Sport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Levante with its rear seat up (31.9 vs. 20.5 cubic feet). The Range Rover Sport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Levante with its rear seat folded (66 vs. 57.3 cubic feet).

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Range Rover Sport’s rear seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Levante doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Towing

The Range Rover Sport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Levante’s (7716 vs. 5952 pounds).

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Levante, the Range Rover Sport has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Levante doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Range Rover Sport’s LED headlights produce a white, bright light using less electricity than the Levante’s standard xenon high intensity discharge (HID) headlights. HID headlights can be slow to reach full brightness or power cycle, causing issues when flashing them to signal other vehicles; LED headlights light instantly. LED lights also last about three to four times as long.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Range Rover Sport offers optional dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The Levante doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

A manual rear sunshade is standard in the Range Rover Sport to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Levante doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

Optional air conditioned front and rear seats keep the Range Rover Sport’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Levante doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Levante.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The Levante doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Levante doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Levante doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport outsold the Maserati Levante by over two to one during 2022.
