Compare the2023 Chrysler PacificaVS 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Chrysler Pacifica are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer height-adjustable middle seat belts.

Both the Pacifica and the Outlander PHEV have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Pacifica its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 127 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Outlander PHEV has not been tested, yet.

The Pacifica’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Outlander PHEV’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are over 7 times as many Chrysler dealers as there are Mitsubishi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Pacifica’s warranty.

The Pacifica Hybrid’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 hybrid produces 12 more horsepower (260 vs. 248) than the Outlander PHEV’s 2.4 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid. The Pacifica’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 39 more horsepower (287 vs. 248) than the Outlander PHEV’s 2.4 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

The Pacifica Hybrid’s standard fuel tank has 1.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Outlander PHEV (16.5 vs. 14.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Pacifica’s standard fuel tank has 4.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Outlander PHEV (19 vs. 14.8 gallons).

The Pacifica has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Having a flat tire is dangerous, inconvenient and expensive. The self-sealing tires available on the Pacifica can automatically seal most punctures up to 3/16 of an inch, effectively preventing most flat tires. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer self-sealing tires.

The Pacifica has a standard space-saver spare (not available on Hybrid) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Outlander PHEV; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The Pacifica’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Pacifica’s wheelbase is 15.1 inches longer than on the Outlander PHEV (121.6 inches vs. 106.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Pacifica is 5.7 inches wider in the front and 5.4 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Outlander PHEV.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Pacifica has standard flush composite headlights. The Outlander PHEV has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The Pacifica uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Pacifica offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the Outlander PHEV can only carry 7.

The Pacifica has 39.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Outlander PHEV (165.1 vs. 125.5).

The Pacifica has 5.1 inches more front hip room, 5.9 inches more front shoulder room, .5 inches more rear headroom, .9 inches more rear legroom, 11.5 inches more rear hip room, 7.1 inches more rear shoulder room, 5.6 inches more third row headroom, 17.4 inches more third row legroom, 7.4 inches more third row hip room and 10 inches more third row shoulder room than the Outlander PHEV.

The Pacifica has standard Stow ’n Go second and third row seats (except Hybrid for the second row), which fold flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Outlander PHEV only has a third row seat which folds into the floor. The Outlander PHEV’s second row seat doesn’t fold into the floor and eats up cargo room.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Pacifica. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Pacifica’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Outlander PHEV’s (3600 vs. 1500 pounds).

The Pacifica’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Outlander PHEV has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

The power windows standard on both the Pacifica and the Outlander PHEV have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Pacifica is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Outlander PHEV prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Pacifica’s standard front power windows lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Outlander PHEV’s standard power windows’ passenger windows don’t open automatically.

The Pacifica’s standard sliding doors can be opened with less than three inches side clearance. The Outlander PHEV’s standard rear swing-out doors are bulky and make loading in tight spots difficult.

The Pacifica’s power side sliding doors make it much easier to load and unload kids and cargo. One touch opens the door, before you even get to the van. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer a power rear door.

The Pacifica’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Outlander PHEV’s power window, power lock and power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Pacifica’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Outlander PHEV’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

The Pacifica’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Mitsubishi only offers heated mirrors on the Outlander PHEV SE/SEL.

The Pacifica’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Outlander PHEV offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Pacifica Limited/Pinnacle keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Pacifica has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Outlander PHEV.

A built-in pollen filter removes pollen, exhaust fumes and other pollutants from the Pacifica’s passenger compartment. This helps prevent lung and/or sinus irritation which can trigger allergies or asthma. The Outlander PHEV’s air conditioner doesn’t offer a filtration system.

The Pacifica’s optional ParkSense Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The Pacifica is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The Outlander PHEV doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Pacifica as the 2017 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. The Outlander PHEV has never been chosen.

The Chrysler Pacifica/Voyager outsold the Mitsubishi Outlander by over two to one during 2022.
