For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Genesis GV80 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Land Rover Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GV80 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Genesis GV80 has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The GV80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The GV80 offers optional Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

Both the GV80 and the Range Rover Sport have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the GV80 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 126 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Range Rover Sport has not been tested, yet.

The GV80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Range Rover Sport’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the GV80 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Land Rover covers the Range Rover Sport. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Range Rover Sport ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The GV80’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Range Rover Sport’s (7 vs. 6 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the GV80 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Land Rover doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Range Rover Sport.

There are over 54 percent more Genesis dealers than there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GV80’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 37 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 22nd, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 129 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 32nd.

As tested in Car and Driver the GV80 3.5T 3.5 turbo V6 is faster than the Range Rover Sport P360 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid:

On the EPA test cycle the GV80 gets better mileage than the Range Rover Sport running its gasoline engine:

The GV80 has 2.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Range Rover Sport P440e’s standard fuel tank (21.1 vs. 18.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The GV80 stops much shorter than the Range Rover Sport:

The GV80’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Range Rover Sport’s optional 45 series tires.

The GV80 PRESTIGE handles at .86 G’s, while the Range Rover Sport SE pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Genesis GV80 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 750 pounds less than the Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

The GV80 is 8.9 inches narrower than the Range Rover Sport, making the GV80 easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the GV80 PRESTIGE is quieter than the Range Rover Sport SE (74 vs. 79 dB).

The GV80 offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Range Rover Sport can only carry 5.

The GV80 has 35 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Range Rover Sport (140 vs. 105).

The GV80 has .9 inches more front headroom, 1.3 inches more front legroom and .9 inches more rear legroom than the Range Rover Sport.

The GV80’s cargo area provides more volume than the Range Rover Sport.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the GV80. The Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

If the windows are left open on the GV80 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Range Rover Sport can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GV80 has standard extendable sun visors. The Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GV80 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The GV80 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Range Rover Sport.

The GV80’s optional Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Optional Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Range Rover Sport’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.

The GV80 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2021. The Range Rover Sport has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.

The Genesis GV80 outsold the Land Rover Range Rover Sport by over two to one during 2022.
