For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes G-Class have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Jeep Wagoneer L doesn’t offer pretensioners for its second-row seat belts.

The G-Class’ pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Wagoneer L doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the G-Class. But it costs extra on the Wagoneer L.

The G-Class’ standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Wagoneer L.

Both the G-Class and Wagoneer L have rear cross-traffic warning, but the G-Class has Active Brake Assist (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Wagoneer L’s Rear Cross Path Detection doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the G-Class and the Wagoneer L have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

The G-Class comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Wagoneer L’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are better in initial quality than Jeep vehicles. With 10 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Mercedes higher than Jeep.

The AMG G 63’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 67 more horsepower (577 vs. 510) and 127 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 500) than the Grand Wagoneer L’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

As tested in Car and Driver the AMG G 63 is faster than the Grand Wagoneer L:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the G-Class’ fuel efficiency. The Wagoneer L doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes G-Class, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Wagoneer L.

The G-Class stops much shorter than the Wagoneer L:

For better traction, the G-Class’ optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Wagoneer L (295/40R22 vs. 285/45R22).

The G 550’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Wagoneer L’s standard 65 series tires. The G-Class’ optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Wagoneer L’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G 550 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Wagoneer L.

The AMG G 63 handles at .75 G’s, while the Grand Wagoneer L 4x4 pulls only .74 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For greater off-road capability the G-Class has a 1.2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Wagoneer L (9.5 vs. 8.3 inches), allowing the G-Class to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Mercedes G-Class may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 850 pounds less than the Jeep Wagoneer L.

The G 550 is 3 feet, 1 inches shorter than the Wagoneer L, making the G-Class easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The G-Class is 7.3 inches narrower on average than the Wagoneer L, making the G-Class easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The G-Class has .6 inches more front headroom and .5 inches more rear headroom than the Wagoneer L.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the G-Class easier. The G-Class’ cargo hatch lift-over height is 29.3 inches, while the Wagoneer L’s liftover is 34 inches.

The G-Class’ front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Wagoneer L’s standard power windows’ rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the G-Class the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Wagoneer L can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The G-Class’ rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Wagoneer L’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The G-Class has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Wagoneer L doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Wagoneer L’s optional cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The G-Class’ standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.
