The E-Class Sedan’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The XF doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes E-Class Sedan are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar XF doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Mercedes E-Class Sedan has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The XF doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The E-Class Sedan’s standard pretensioning seatbelts also sense rear collisions and remove slack from the seatbelts to help protect the occupants from whiplash and other injuries. The XF doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The E-Class Sedan offers an optional Post Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The XF doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The E-Class Sedan offers an optional Maneuvering Brake Function that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The XF doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

Both the E-Class Sedan and the XF have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available lane departure warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, with its optional vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the E-Class Sedan its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 126 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The XF has not been tested, yet.

There are over 2 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the E-Class Sedan’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the E-Class Sedan third among midsize premium cars in their 2022 Initial Quality Study. The XF isn’t in the top three in its category.

The E 350 Sedan’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 9 more horsepower (255 vs. 246) and 4 lbs.-ft. more torque (273 vs. 269) than the XF P250’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The E 450 4MATIC Sedan’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 66 more horsepower (362 vs. 296) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 295) than the XF P300’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the E 450 Sedan 4MATIC gets better fuel mileage than the XF P300 AWD (23 city/31 hwy vs. 22 city/30 hwy).

The E-Class Sedan 450’s standard fuel tank has 1.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the XF (21.1 vs. 19.5 gallons).

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes E-Class Sedan, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the XF.

For better stopping power the E 450 4MATIC Sedan’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the XF:

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the E-Class Sedan can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The XF doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The E-Class Sedan has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The E-Class Sedan’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The XF doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The E-Class Sedan’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The XF doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the E-Class Sedan a Mid-size car, while the XF is rated a Compact.

The E-Class Sedan has 3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XF (98 vs. 95).

The E-Class Sedan has .2 inches more front legroom, .9 inches more front shoulder room and .7 inches more rear shoulder room than the XF.

The E-Class Sedan has a much larger trunk than the XF Sedan (13.1 vs. 10.1 cubic feet).

The E-Class Sedan has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The XF doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

Heated windshield washer fluid is standard on the E-Class Sedan to defrost the washer nozzles and quickly clear ice and frost from the windshield without scraping. The XF doesn’t offer heated windshield washer fluid. Its optional heated washer nozzles will defrost the washer fluid but not the windshield.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the E-Class Sedan offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The XF doesn’t offer cornering lights.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the E-Class Sedan has standard dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The XF doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the E-Class Sedan has standard extendable sun visors. The XF doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The E-Class Sedan’s optional Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The XF S’ automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.

The Mercedes E-Class comes in coupe, convertible, sedan and station wagon bodystyles; the Jaguar XF isn’t available as a coupe, convertible or station wagon.

The E-Class Sedan will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the E-Class Sedan will retain 40.76% to 42.76% of its original price after five years, while the XF only retains 32.78% to 33.1%.

Motor Trend selected the E-Class as their 2021 Car of the Year. The XF has never been chosen.

The Mercedes E-Class/CLS outsold the Jaguar XF by almost 22 to one during 2022.
