The AMG E-Class Wagon’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Panamera doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The AMG E-Class Wagon offers an optional Post Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Panamera doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The AMG E-Class Wagon has a standard Maneuvering Brake Function that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Panamera doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the AMG E-Class Wagon. But it costs extra on the Panamera.

The AMG E-Class Wagon has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the Panamera’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the AMG E-Class Wagon’s standard Rear Cross-Traffic Alert uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side and Active Brake Assist automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. The Panamera doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Panamera doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the AMG E-Class Wagon and the Panamera have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available lane departure warning systems.

There are almost 2 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Porsche dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the AMG E-Class Wagon’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are better in initial quality than Porsche vehicles. With 11 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Mercedes higher than Porsche.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 278 more horsepower (603 vs. 325) and 296 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 331) than the Panamera’s standard 2.9 turbo V6. The AMG E-Class Wagon’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 160 more horsepower (603 vs. 443) and 222 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 405) than the Panamera 4S’ standard 2.9 turbo V6. The AMG E-Class Wagon’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 148 more horsepower (603 vs. 455) and 111 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 516) than the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid’s standard 2.9 turbo V6 hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the Mercedes AMG E-Class Wagon is faster than the Porsche Panamera:

On the EPA test cycle the AMG E-Class Wagon gets better mileage than the Panamera Sport Turismo running its gasoline engine:

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes AMG E-Class Wagon higher (5 out of 10) than the Porsche Panamera (3 to 5). This means the AMG E-Class Wagon produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Panamera every 15,000 miles.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes AMG E-Class Wagon, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Panamera.

For better stopping power the AMG E-Class Wagon’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Panamera:

In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The AMG E-Class Wagon has standard Brake Assist to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The Panamera doesn’t offer a brake assist feature.

The AMG E-Class Wagon stops shorter than the Panamera:

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s 265/35R20 front and 295/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Panamera’s standard 45 series front and 40 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the AMG E-Class Wagon has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the Panamera.

The front and rear suspension of the AMG E-Class Wagon uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Panamera, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Panamera doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The AMG E-Class Wagon has .2 inches more rear headroom, .5 inches more rear legroom and 2.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the Panamera.

The AMG E-Class Wagon Wagon has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Panamera Sport Turismo with its rear seat up (35 vs. 18.3 cubic feet). The AMG E-Class Wagon Wagon has a much larger trunk with its rear seat folded than the Panamera Sport Turismo with its rear seat folded (64 vs. 49 cubic feet).

The AMG E-Class Wagon has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Panamera doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Panamera.

If the windows are left open on the AMG E-Class Wagon the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote (remote must be aimed at door sensor). On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Panamera can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Panamera’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

Heated windshield washer fluid is standard on the AMG E-Class Wagon to defrost the washer nozzles and quickly clear ice and frost from the windshield without scraping. The Panamera doesn’t offer heated windshield washer fluid.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the AMG E-Class Wagon has a standard rear wiper. A rear wiper costs extra on the Panamera.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the AMG E-Class Wagon has standard dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The Panamera doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

The AMG E-Class Wagon has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Panamera.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Panamera doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The Mercedes AMG E-Class comes in coupe, convertible, sedan and station wagon bodystyles; the Porsche Panamera isn’t available as a coupe or convertible.

Motor Trend selected the E-Class as their 2021 Car of the Year. The Panamera has never been chosen.
