For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes AMG E-Class Wagon have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The AMG E-Class Wagon offers an optional Post Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The AMG E-Class Wagon has a standard Maneuvering Brake Function that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The AMG E-Class Wagon has a standard Surround View System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the AMG E-Class Wagon and Stelvio Quadrifoglio have rear cross-traffic warning, but the AMG E-Class Wagon has Active Brake Assist (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s Rear Cross-Path Detection doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the AMG E-Class Wagon and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available lane departure warning systems.

Warranty

There are almost 3 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the AMG E-Class Wagon’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are better in initial quality than Alfa Romeo vehicles. With 22 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Mercedes higher than Alfa Romeo.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo With 50 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Mercedes higher than Alfa Romeo.

Engine

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 98 more horsepower (603 vs. 505) and 184 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 443) than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s 2.9 turbo V6.

As tested in Motor Trend the Mercedes AMG E-Class Wagon is faster than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio:

Fuel Economy and Range

The AMG E-Class Wagon has 4.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (21.1 vs. 16.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes AMG E-Class Wagon higher (5 out of 10) than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio (3). This means the AMG E-Class Wagon produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes AMG E-Class Wagon, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the AMG E-Class Wagon’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the AMG E-Class Wagon has larger tires than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (F:265/35R20 & R:295/30R20 vs. F:255/45R20 & R:285/40R20).

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s 265/35R20 front and 295/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s standard 45 series front and 40 series rear tires. The AMG E-Class Wagon’s tires are lower profile than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s optional 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the AMG E-Class Wagon uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The AMG E-Class Wagon has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The AMG E-Class Wagon’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the AMG E-Class Wagon’s wheelbase is 4.8 inches longer than on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (115.7 inches vs. 110.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the AMG E-Class Wagon is 3.7 inches wider in the front than on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

The AMG E 63 S Wagon handles at .98 G’s, while the Stelvio Quadrifoglio pulls only .92 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The AMG E 63 S Wagon executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (24.2 seconds @ .83 average G’s vs. 24.9 seconds @ .79 average G’s).

Chassis

The AMG E-Class Wagon is 8.3 inches shorter in height than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, making the AMG E-Class Wagon much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

The design of the Mercedes AMG E-Class Wagon amounts to more than styling. The AMG E-Class Wagon has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is lower than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (.34) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the AMG E-Class Wagon get better fuel mileage.

Passenger Space

The AMG E-Class Wagon has 5.1 inches more front legroom, .3 inches more front shoulder room, 4.2 inches more rear legroom and 1.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

Cargo Capacity

The AMG E-Class Wagon has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio with its rear seat up (35 vs. 18.5 cubic feet). The AMG E-Class Wagon has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio with its rear seat folded (64 vs. 56.5 cubic feet).

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s cargo area is larger than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s in almost every dimension:

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors in the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, the AMG E-Class Wagon has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The AMG E-Class Wagon offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the AMG E-Class Wagon the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote (remote must be aimed at door sensor). On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Stelvio Quadrifoglio can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer fluid is standard on the AMG E-Class Wagon to defrost the washer nozzles and quickly clear ice and frost from the windshield without scraping. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer heated windshield washer fluid. Its standard heated washer nozzles will defrost the washer fluid but not the windshield.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s LED headlights produce a white, bright light using less electricity than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s xenon high intensity discharge (HID) headlights. HID headlights can be slow to reach full brightness or power cycle, causing issues when flashing them to signal other vehicles; LED headlights light instantly. LED lights also last about three to four times as long.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the AMG E-Class Wagon has standard dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the AMG E-Class Wagon to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the AMG E-Class Wagon is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the AMG E-Class Wagon keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The AMG E-Class Wagon has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel isn’t available on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio w/Sparco Racing Seats.

The AMG E-Class Wagon offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

The AMG E-Class Wagon’s Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Model Availability

The Mercedes AMG E-Class comes in coupe, convertible, sedan and station wagon bodystyles; the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio isn’t available as a coupe, convertible or sedan.

Recommendations

Motor Trend selected the E-Class as their 2021 Car of the Year. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio has never been chosen.

The Mercedes E-Class/CLS outsold the Alfa Romeo Stelvio by over two to one during 2022.
