The AMG GLA 35’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 108 more horsepower (302 vs. 194) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 221) than the XC40 B4’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The AMG GLA 35’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 55 more horsepower (302 vs. 247) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 258) than the XC40 B5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The AMG GLA 45’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 135 more horsepower (382 vs. 247) and 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (354 vs. 258) than the XC40 B5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

The AMG GLA offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The XC40 doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

The AMG GLA 45’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The XC40 doesn’t offer launch control.

For better stopping power the AMG GLA’s brake rotors are larger than those on the XC40:

The AMG GLA’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the XC40 are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the AMG GLA’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the XC40 (255/35R21 vs. 245/45R20).

The AMG GLA’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XC40’s standard 55 series tires. The AMG GLA’s optional tires have a lower 35 series profile than the XC40’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the AMG GLA has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the XC40. The AMG GLA’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the XC40.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the AMG GLA can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The XC40 doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The AMG GLA has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The XC40’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The AMG GLA has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The XC40’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The AMG GLA’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The XC40 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The AMG GLA has 1.8 inches more front headroom, .2 inches more front legroom, 2.6 inches more front hip room, 2.3 inches more rear legroom and 2.7 inches more rear hip room than the XC40.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the AMG GLA’s rear seats recline. The XC40’s rear seats don’t recline.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the AMG GLA easier. The AMG GLA’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 27.2 inches, while the XC40’s liftover is 29.6 inches.

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors in the XC40, the AMG GLA has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The AMG GLA’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The XC40 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The AMG GLA offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The XC40 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Heated windshield washer fluid is standard on the AMG GLA to defrost the washer nozzles and quickly clear ice and frost from the windshield without scraping. The XC40 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer fluid.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the AMG GLA keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The XC40 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The AMG GLA offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the XC40.

The AMG GLA has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XC40 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The AMG GLA’s optional Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The XC40’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
