Compare the2023 Genesis G90VS 2023 Lexus LS

Both the G90 and LS have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The G90 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The LS’ child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the G90 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The LS doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The G90 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The LS doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The G90 has standard Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The LS doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the G90. But it costs extra on the LS.

Both the G90 and the LS have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, daytime pedestrian crash prevention, and nighttime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G90 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2023, a rating granted to only 29 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The LS has not been tested, yet.

The G90 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The LS’ 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G90 4 years and 30,000 miles longer than Lexus covers the LS. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the LS ends after only 6 years or 70,000 miles.

The G90’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the LS’ (7 vs. 6 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the G90 for 2 years and 26000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the LS (3/36,000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 25 percent more Genesis dealers than there are Lexus dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the G90’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Lexus vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 1 more problems per 100 vehicles, Lexus is ranked 6th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Lexus vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 4 more problems per 100 vehicles, Lexus is ranked 6th.

The G90 3.5T’s standard 3.5 turbo V6 produces 21 more horsepower (375 vs. 354) and 41 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 350) than the LS 500h’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6 hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the G90 3.5T e-SC 3.5 turbo/supercharged V6 hybrid is faster than the LS 500 3.4 turbo V6:

Regardless of its engine, the G90’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. Lexus only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the LS Hybrid, and doesn’t offer a disable button.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Genesis G90 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The LS requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

For better traction and acceleration, the G90 has larger rear tires than the LS (275/40R20 vs. 245/50R19).

The G90 3.5T’s standard 245/45R20 front and 275/40R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series front and 40 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the LS’ standard 50 series tires. The G90 3.5T e-SC’s 245/40R21 front and 275/35R21 rear tires have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile than the LS 500 F Sport’s 45 series front and 40 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G90 3.5T has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the LS. The G90 3.5T e-SC’s 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the LS.

The G90 3.5T has a standard space-saver spare (not available on 3.5T e-SC) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the LS; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G90’s wheelbase is 2.2 inches longer than on the LS (125.2 inches vs. 123 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the G90 is 1 inch wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the LS.

The G90’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50.6% to 49.4%) than the LS’ (53% to 47%). This gives the G90 more stable handling and braking.

The G90 3.5T e-SC handles at .84 G’s, while the LS 500 AWD pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The design of the Genesis G90 amounts to more than styling. The G90 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .27 Cd. That is lower than the LS (.28 to .3) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the G90 get better fuel mileage.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the G90 3.5T e-SC is quieter than the LS 500 AWD:

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the G90 a Large car, while the LS is rated a Mid-size.

The G90 has 9.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the LS (109.2 vs. 99.4).

The G90 has 2.1 inches more front headroom, 1.3 inches more front legroom, .3 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom and 1.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the LS.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Genesis G90 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console and for the rear passengers. The LS doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The G90’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The LS doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Car and Driver performed a comparison test in its November 2022 issue and they ranked the Genesis G90 3.5T e-SC higher than the Lexus LS 500 AWD.
