Compare the2023 Ram HDVS 2023 Ford F-Super Duty

Both the Ram HD and the F-Super Duty have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Ram HD has larger alternators than the F-Super Duty:

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Ram HD’s reliability 12 points higher than the F-Super Duty.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Ram vehicles are more reliable than Ford vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Ram 2 places higher in reliability than Ford.

The Ram HD’s 6.4 V8 produces 10 more horsepower (410 vs. 400) than the F-Super Duty’s standard 6.8 V8.

The Ram HD 3500’s optional 6.7 turbo diesel produces 25 lbs.-ft. more torque (1075 vs. 1050) than the F-Super Duty’s optional 6.7 turbo V8 diesel.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Ram HD V8’s fuel efficiency. The F-Super Duty doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Ram HD Gas’ engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. The F-Super Duty doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Ram HD Standard Bed Crew Cab’s standard fuel tank has 2 gallons more fuel capacity than the F-Super Duty Diesel’s standard fuel tank (31 vs. 29 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Ram HD Long Bed Crew Cab’s optional fuel tank has 2 gallons more fuel capacity than the F-Super Duty Crew Cab’s optional fuel tank (50 vs. 48 gallons).

In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The Ram HD has a standard brake assist system to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The F-Super Duty doesn’t offer a brake assist feature.

The Ram HD has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The F-Super Duty doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Ram HD has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Ram HD flat and controlled during cornering. The F-Super Duty’s standard suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The Ram HD Power Wagon has an active front sway bar, which helps keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnects at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The F-Super Duty doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Ram HD 3500 has a standard automatic load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The F-Super Duty doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better maneuverability, the Ram HD’s turning circle is tighter than the F-Super Duty’s:

For greater off-road capability the Ram HD 3500 Long Box Crew Cab has a 2.9 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the F-450 Long Bed Regular Cab (11.5 vs. 8.6 inches), allowing the Ram HD to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Ram HD is shorter than the F-Super Duty, making the Ram HD easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces:

The front grille of the Ram HD uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The F-Super Duty doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Ram HD offers available computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The F-Super Duty doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Ram HD Crew Cab has .1 inches more front headroom and .4 inches more front hip room than the F-Super Duty SuperCrew.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Ram HD Mega Cab’s available rear seats recline. The F-Super Duty’s optional rear seats don’t recline.

The Ram HD offers an optional tailgate assist feature (not available Tradesman), which prevents the heavy tailgate from falling with a crash and causing injury. It allows adults and children to easily open and close the tailgate with one hand to better facilitate loading and unloading. The Ford F-Super Duty doesn’t offer a tailgate assist.

The Ram HD has stake post holes, to allow the containment of tall, light loads. The F-Super Duty doesn’t offer stake post holes.

The Ram HD has an all welded cargo box to eliminate possible corrosion spots and to provide better chassis stiffness. The cargo box in the F-Super Duty is bolted through the bed to the frame with large bolts. These bolts are a prime area for corrosion to start as the normal flexing of the truck’s chassis causes them to eat through the finish; they can also snag cargo as it slides in and out.

The Ram HD’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the F-Super Duty’s (14470 vs. 14100 pounds).

The Ram HD 4WD can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Ram HD can be unhitched and driven around locally. The F-Super Duty can’t be towed flat on the ground.

When the Ram HD with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The F-Super Duty’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Ram HD’s optional rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The F-Super Duty offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Motor Trend selected the Ram HD as their 2020 Truck of the Year. The F-Super Duty has never been chosen.
