For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Ford F-Super Duty have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision. The GMC Sierra HD doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The F-Super Duty offers optional Post Collision Braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Sierra HD doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The F-Super Duty offers an optional Reverse Brake Assist that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Sierra HD doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the F-Super Duty and Sierra HD offer rear cross-traffic warning, but the F-150 with Cross Traffic Alert also has Cross Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic.

The F-Super Duty (except XL/XLT)’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Sierra HD doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the F-Super Duty and the Sierra HD have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

Warranty

The F-Super Duty’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Sierra HD’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are over 79 percent more Ford dealers than there are GMC dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the F-Super Duty’s warranty.

Reliability

The F-Super Duty 4x4 has a solid front axle with a floating power axle for durability that the Sierra HD 4x4’s independent front suspension and exposed front driveshafts don’t offer.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Ford vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford above average in long-term dependability. With 4 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, GMC is rated lower.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Ford vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Ford 3 places higher in reliability than GMC.

Engine

The F-Super Duty’s optional 7.3 V8 produces 29 more horsepower (430 vs. 401) and 21 lbs.-ft. more torque (485 vs. 464) than the Sierra HD’s 6.6 V8.

The F-Super Duty’s optional 6.7 turbo V8 diesel produces 30 more horsepower (475 vs. 445) and 140 lbs.-ft. more torque (1050 vs. 910) than the Sierra HD’s 6.6 turbo V8 diesel. The F-Super Duty’s optional 6.7 turbo V8 diesel produces 55 more horsepower (500 vs. 445) and 290 lbs.-ft. more torque (1200 vs. 910) than the Sierra HD’s 6.6 turbo V8 diesel.

Fuel Economy and Range

The F-Super Duty Diesel’s standard fuel tank has a gallon more fuel capacity than the Sierra HD Diesel Regular Cab’s standard fuel tank (29 vs. 28 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The F-Super Duty’s standard fuel tank has 6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Sierra HD Diesel Regular Cab’s standard fuel tank (34 vs. 28 gallons). The F-Super Duty Crew Cab’s optional fuel tank has 12 gallons more fuel capacity than the Sierra HD’s standard fuel tank (48 vs. 36 gallons).

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the F-Super Duty’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Sierra HD:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the F-Super Duty has larger standard tires than the Sierra HD (245/75R17 vs. 235/80R17). The F-Super Duty Off-Road’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Sierra HD (285/70R17 vs. 275/70R18).

The F-Super Duty’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 75 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Sierra 3500 HD’s standard 80 series tires. The F-250’s optional tires have a lower 50 series profile than the Sierra HD’s optional 65 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The F-Super Duty’s optional suspension has front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the F-Super Duty flat and controlled during cornering. The Sierra HD’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The front suspension of the F-Super Duty uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the Sierra HD, which uses torsion bars in front. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the F-Super Duty’s wheelbase is longer than on the Sierra HD:

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the F-Super Duty is 1.4 inches wider in the front than the average track on the Sierra HD.

Chassis

The Ford F-Super Duty may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 400 pounds less than the GMC Sierra HD.

The F-Super Duty is shorter than the Sierra HD, making the F-Super Duty easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces:

Payload and Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the GMC Sierra HD is limited to 36,000 pounds. The F-450 Long Bed Regular Cab offers up to a 40,000 lbs. towing capacity.

Ergonomics

The F-Super Duty’s standard power windows allow the driver or passenger to lower and raise the windows without leaning over or being distracted. Power windows cost extra on the Sierra HD.

The F-Super Duty’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Sierra HD’s basic optional power windows’ front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

The F-Super Duty’s standard power locks allow the driver or passenger to lock or unlock all the doors at a touch without leaning over. Power locks cost extra on the Sierra HD.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the F-Super Duty’s available exterior PIN entry system. The Sierra HD doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its extra cost OnStar® can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

The F-Super Duty’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Sierra HD’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The F-Super Duty Lariat/King Ranch/Platinum/Limited’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the F-Super Duty has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Sierra HD doesn’t offer cornering lights. The F-Super Duty also offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

The F-Super Duty has standard power remote mirrors. The Sierra HD only comes with remote mirrors at extra cost. Without them the driver will have to roll down the windows and reach across the car to adjust the mirrors.

The F-Super Duty’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. GMC charges extra for heated mirrors on the Sierra HD.

The F-Super Duty Platinum/Limited has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Sierra HD.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the F-Super Duty (except XL/XLT) offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Sierra HD doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Recommendations

The Ford F-Series outsold the GMC Sierra by almost three to one during 2022.
