2023 Ferrari Portofino
2020 McLaren GT

Safety

The Portofino offers optional crash mitigation brakes, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The McLaren GT doesn't offer collision warning or crash mitigation brakes.

The Portofino’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The McLaren GT doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The Portofino offers an optional Surround View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The McLaren GT only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Portofino’s optional blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The McLaren GT doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Portofino’s optional rear cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The McLaren GT doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

The Portofino has standard GPS Response System, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The McLaren GT doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Portofino and the McLaren GT have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

Warranty

Ferrari pays for scheduled maintenance on the Portofino for 7 years and unlimited miles. Ferrari will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. McLaren doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the GT.

Reliability

The McLaren GT’s redline is at 8500 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The Portofino has a 7500 RPM redline.

Engine

The Portofino’s 3.9 turbo V8 produces 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (561 vs. 465) than the McLaren GT’s 4.0 turbo V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Portofino M gets better fuel mileage than the McLaren GT (16 city/23 hwy vs. 15 city/21 hwy).

The Portofino has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the McLaren GT (21.1 vs. 19 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Portofino has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The McLaren GT doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

An eight-speed automatic (SMG) is standard on the Ferrari Portofino, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the McLaren GT.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Portofino’s brake rotors are larger than those on the McLaren GT:

Portofino

GT

Front Rotors

15.4 inches

14.5 inches

Rear Rotors

14.2 inches

13.9 inches

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Portofino has larger front tires than the McLaren GT (245/35R20 vs. 225/35R20).

Suspension and Handling

The Portofino’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (46% to 54%) than the McLaren GT’s (42.5% to 57.5%). This gives the Portofino more stable handling and braking.

Chassis

The Portofino is 3.5 inches shorter than the McLaren GT, making the Portofino easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Portofino’s standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The McLaren GT doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

Passenger Space

The Portofino has standard seating for 4 passengers; the McLaren GT can only carry 2.

Ergonomics

The Portofino’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. McLaren does not offer a locking feature on the McLaren GT’s standard power windows.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the Portofino detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The McLaren GT doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

The Portofino’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The McLaren GT has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Portofino offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The McLaren GT doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Standard smartphone integration for the Portofino allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, playing internet radio stations and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The McLaren GT doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.
